Revisting the Rubbin' the Dub Top 125

Post by april81972 »

So I've managed to find digital copies of just about everything on this list in fairly decent quality. Yes, they are all mp3's (shudder), but it's better than not having them at all. I'm turning to the experts here to see if you can add any insight to the following LPs that are still MIA. I've put my own comments next to each release.

For those who don't know what I'm referring to, check here:

Thanks so much for any help. Cheers.

King Tubby's Vengeance (Prophets - LP only) - does this exist? just the song?
Batta Dub (Well Charge - LP only) - does this exist?
Dub Up Tenement Yard (Observer - LP only) - At King Tubby's Dub Plate Specials 1973-1975?
Prophets Bootleg Dub (White label - LP only) - anyone heard/have this?
Money Maker Dub (Studio One - LP only) - does this exist?
More Dub (Joe Gibbs - LP only) - Dub Serial?
Sir Collins In Session (Nice One - LP only) - same as Sir Collins Music Wheel Vol.1
Ranking Dillinger In Dub (Jackpot - LP only) - None Stop Disco Style?

Money Makers is on this site under Jackie Mittoo. I think it was released in Canada first on Jackie's own label, then later came out on Studio One. Unless they are separate albums with the same name?

I'm looking the Canada release since long time.

I love reading those old articles/lists from NME/Black Echoes etc but the authors were lacking access to the all seeing all knowing medium of the internet - and some of the info is a little off.

Looking at your list I would say:

(1) king tubby's vengeance + prophets bootleg dub are not real LP's that are out there to find but just different titles for things like "prophecy of dub" which as we know was pressed in very limited quantities and never came with a sleeve anyway
(2) batta dub is just a misspelling of satta dub which has recently been reissued
(3) dub in a tenement yard is probably sledgehammer dub (a dub tenement yard is one of the dubs it contains - on my copy of the original observer label release there is no tracks - and if soundman has scratched the title - none at all! this has been reissued on motion (cd and LP)
(4) there is no money maker dub on studio one - there is a very nice mainly instrumental LP just called money maker - which was re-issued a while ago
(5) not sure about more dub - but dub serial could be it
(6) the sir sollins dub LP has been reissued in the UK recently
(7) I think the ranking dillinger is a dillinger LP which has toasts followed by dubs on some copies (talking blues) and on other copies has dillinger toasting on one side with the dubs on the other side (weedbeat label)

Hi april81972

More Dub (Joe Gibbs - LP only) is indeed Dub Serial
Trs. 2&3 are titled so on the reissue.

Here is a link to the actual article on my website:

Here is the info I have for the missing LP's. Been searching these LP's out for almost 20 years. I have asked all the hardcore collectors who were buying these records when they were coming out and gathered information from them and collectors over the years. jayb has most of it right

King Tubby's Vengaence:
It's just another pressing of King Tubby's Prophecies of dub (The one that came with the sleeve) but it's on Prophet's label not prestige label....seen this variation a few times on auctions....here are some pics:

http://www.popsike.com/KING-TUBBYS-PROP ... 97952.html

http://collectorsfrenzy.com/details/221 ... YS_RECORDS

Batta Dub is an incorrect spelling of Satta Dub

Dub up Tenement yard:
This must either be referring to "Sledgehammer dub in the streets of Jamaica" or they could also be referring to a Jamaican variation of "Dubbing with the Observer" that comes on a different label to the total sounds / observer pressing

Here are some pics of those:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/OBSERVER-ALL-ST ... 7675.l2557

Prophets bootleg dub
....well nobody seems to know anything about this but I would guess it's just some random white label of Beware or another yabby you released dub lp

Money maker dub is definitely Studio One's Money Maker LP which is mostly instrumental

More Dub
Is definitely referring to Dub Serial which says "More Dub" on the sleeve

Sir Collins in session is not a full dub lp. Has lots of vocals

Ranking Dillinger in Dub is just a UK pre release of "Dillinger Superstar" LP on weedbeat which is an A side vocals / B side dubs
Here are pictures of those:

Other notes I have about the article:

There are a handful of Vocal LP's mentioned as well such as Rhythm Shower LP / Sir Collins In Session LP / Ranking Dillinger in Dub LP / Reggae Confusion Third World LP / Entering the Dragon LP / Step Forward Youth LP / Can't conquer Rasta LP (I Roy) / Johnnie Clarke Disco Dub / Twelve Tribes of Israel LP / Legga A Fi Wi Dis LP / Straight To Babylon Chest LP / Dread Locks In Jamaica LP / A Who Seh Go Deh LP / Surrounded By The Dreads at National Arena LP / Strictly Rockers In A Dread Land LP / Chant Down Babylon Kingdom LP / Yamaha Skank Dr Satan Echo Chamber LP / Harder Shade of Black / Dread Locks dread LP (Big Youth)

And then there are a slew of "Instrumental" not "Dub" records on the list....

It seems also there are few LP's mentioned twice like:
Dub Serial and More dub
Prohets / Prestige
Sledgehammer Dub / Dub Up Tenement Yard

There are also some mysterious titles to some of the LP's like:

"ABC DUB" is EE Saw dub which says "An ABC production on the label" although I have talked to a collector 15 years ago that says he remembers owning "ABC Dub" on Penetrate label but it was the same as EE saw Dub but it had a cover!?!

Aquarius Dub Vol 2
?? This can't possibly be the "Music-Ism" LP's because those didn't come out until the 80's so I assume it's the Aquarius Vocal LP that has the same cover as the original "Aquarius Dub" but with the street scene on the back of the sleeve instead of the blank dub sleeve.

For a more comprehensive list of original full Dub LP's please check my website:
dublp.roots-archives.com

I have several new Lp's I have found over the last few years to add to the site when I get time.
