Sly and Robbie Sound of Sound vol 1 Sonic Sounds/Taxi album, which according to Google doesn't seem to exist. Bought from a charity shop for £5...

Tyrone Evans ‎– Sings Bullwackie Style

This album is quickly becoming one of my favorite Wackies sets. I mainly picked it up for "Dread Light" (the dub of which is on Reckless Roots Rockers I think) but really the whole thing is top stuff. There's not a bad song to be found although it is heavy on lovers so it may not be for some tastes. Several of the rhythms are featured on Prince Douglas' Dub Roots and the remainder are just as nice. Recommended listening for Wackolytes and Wackophytes alike.

Billy, is Tyrone Evans the same as Don Evans? I have a 12" on the Supertone label by Don that was distributed by Wackie's titled Love Vibration with Jah Batta on the flip.

Definitely your typical Wackie's rhythm with lovers vocal. I've been on a real Wackie's kick lateley.

Yes, jp, Don Evans is definitely Tyrone Evans. He sounds a fair bit like Ken Boothe sometimes. I like that Supertone 12" you mention! It is a great rhythm with alternate cuts by Badoo, Toyan and at least one more artist I cannot recall. It never occurred to me it is a Wackie's production because it is played by the Radics, but it does have a bit of that squishy kind of Wackie's sound.

I certainly relate to your Wackie's excursion. There are so many great Wackie's 45s and quite a few nice albums too. When I play some Wackie's discos it's tough to switch to a different label or era--I usually keep pulling Wackie's until I turn off the hi-fi. Itopia in particular is a fantastic band and one of the very best reggae outfits of any era. Bullwackie is the name most folks know but Itopia is the main reason for the label's success (by reggae standards) in the 80's. Production, vocals and mix are all secondary to strong rhythms.

Have you heard the lp Tyrone recorded as Don Evans on Techniques? From a listen to mp3s a few years back, I recall there are only a couple nice tracks. I do not trust my past self too much these days, however.

Hadn't heard of that album but I just looked it up and found a clip of the track "Come Rain Or Shine" which is nice. Looks like there was a pressing out of Japan that is a lot cheaper than the Techniques.

A friend of mine here in North Carolina did a Wackie's In Dub special on one of his radio shows a little while back. You may be interested in checking it out. He was able to interview Lloyd Barnes as well as a part of it.
