Movies Sountracks with Ska/Reggae/Dub

Post by cazevedo »

I didn't want to highjack Beba's question/thread (which I don't have an answer to), but it made me think about some of the movies I've seen over the years that had old ska/reggae/dub songs in them. So, instead I've created a more specific topic for this.

More recently...

Alfie (2004; Jude Law) - Skatalites - Eastern Standard Time

Broken Flowers (2005; Bill Murray) - Tennors - Ride Do Donkey (Ride Your Donkey)

Hi there, I saw Coffee and Cigarretes last week and in that scene there are at least 4 Skatalites tunes I had never heard before. The soundtrack just includes the one Greg mentioned. Anybody knows the others?

Broken Flowers (Jarmusch) also has "El Bang Bang"-Mittoo.
Ghost Dog (Jarmusch)-"Armaggideon time"-W.Williams
Blood Simple (Cohen Brothers)- "Louie Louie"-Toots

Lock, stock & Barrel-"Police and thieves"-Murvin

In the UK reggae, or more specifically SKA is constantly used as advertising backing tracks. Sometimes for very unsuitable purposes (by unsuitable I mean to advertise some of Babylon's worst excesses and most serious exploiters)

Just saw an advert on TV for sandals.com (holidays I think) using "I'm in the mood for love" as the backing track. Sorry, I'm not much on Ska / Rocksteady (even though I love it) so I am not sure who sang that track originally.

Someone is minting it off this old Ska stuff and I doubt it is the guy(s) who wrote / sang / recorded / produced them.

Hi, that song was sung back in 1965 by Lord Tanamo with the Skatalites but was called "I´m in the mood for ska". Tanamo´s vocals are unmistakable. The original "in the mood for love" was written by Dorothy Fields for a movie in 1935 but many people have covered it since then ...

The "Lock Stock and Barrel" scene with Police & Thives by Junior Murvin is absolutely fantastic. It's a short scene where you watch a totally high dude that's walking in a field of ganja. That's just awesome.
