Hi...
I was just wonderin how much of the 70s reggae sounds is gettin lost with time... Because naturally, more and more rarities accumulates in the "will never reappear" pack... because few copies were made and nowadays non of them is still in sufficient condition to record or re-release... And I guess that most of the studio tapes are lost or in poor condition...
Every man invested in vinyl keep his own "one away tunes" that were pressed at 100 or 200 exemplaries on unknown labels and by unknown singers.. because production was so impressive that a lot of killers never surfaced... So I suppose that a lot is gettin lost trough time...
Or maybe more re-emerge through the easier sharing format of digital music... What do you think?

I go with your last suggestion. I think that, since digital transfer and CD burning came along, more rare stuff is being archived and shared in digital format. I was a big collector of Reggae vinyl 7" in the 70s but I can get things now that I would never have dreamed of ever hearing back then.

If producers don't save there tapes on DAT
(not on harddisk or cd don't work if they are proffessional) it's lost.
7"/10"/12" vinyl is save by collectors all over the world.
And can spread around on media - Vinyl/Cd/mp3.

Hi Litelet
You would have thought that was the case with blues music as a majority of early blues was recorded directly onto acetate as there was no such thing as tape at that time.
The good news is that with the advent of the digital process it is more readily available than it has ever been. And I am talking about music from the 1920's and earlier.

Well, Im hoping so...!! But its difficult to have an idea...!! To get back the hard sound of 70s, the best would be to restore and digitalise the original tapes. The jamaican represses made from a vinyl recording are most of the time far too ugly to appreciate...
I know that through time, a lot of studio tapes get oxided, which affect the sound by adding parasites and reducing the amplitude... I hope that producers took dispositions to store better those tapes... but Jamaica live at present time and Im not sure that the old stuff was really considered... except by the artists that hoped to have a second echo one day and get paid for their work.

Re: 70's reggae music gettin lost?
Being nearly 50 years old (ouch) and having started buying reggae in the mid-70s I would say that it is actually easier to get hold of "rare" reggae now than it was then. Not on vinyl obviously, but my view is I would rather listen to it on CD than not at all.
For example, I never thought I would ever hear Ricky Storm's 1972 version of "The Way It Is" ever again and yet now anyone can buy it on "More Pressure Vol 1 (Straight To The Head)".

A lot of master tapes are gone.
I've seen it with my own eyes.
It's the way of life.
Even Coxsone tapes over his own tapes.

My experience is that one tape gets lost whilst another gets found.
These tapes were found recently - Thelonius Monk Quartet With John Coltrane - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thelonius-Monk- ... F8&s=music
It's a gig from 1957!!!!!!
