Desmond Irie

Post by Rootsman »

Hi guys,

Please see this link

http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1697#rel5277

I have a couple of questions.

There is a superb track on this album called "Babylon you must go down" by a guy called Desmond Irie.

The first question is who knows anything about this guy as he does not appear to be listed on the archives under this name ?

The second question is that there is an extra dub on the CD called "Dub One" by Desmond Irie and King Tubby. What is the vocal to this track ?

Last question is are there any other records by this guy which are worth checking out.

Thanks in advance

Respect

Info from the "The Sound Of Channel One-King Tubby Connection" booklet:
The doomladen, sombre roots song "Babylon You Must Go Down" is Desmond Irie's only known vocal recording. Desmond was a session drummer in the 70's who backed famous names in the Jamaican music business and was also well known as a driver who would carry the stars to and from stage shows and recording dates.

Hi guys.

Thanks for the feedback.

Manfas, I did read this in the sleeve notes with the CD.

What made me wonder was the bonus track on the 1st disc titled "Dub One" is credited to both Desmond Irie and King Tubby.

I assumed that as Desmond Irie is credited on this dub that their must be a vocal counterpart which he sings on.

If this was the case then perhaps the liner notes may be incorrect and their is more of his singing on record in existance.

RKR lists only one record of this artist:
Desmond Irie - "Babylon Must Fall"
Producer: T.Robinson
Ja Label: Groovemaster
Ja Matrix: DSR 4992
Date: 1978

but it could be just another title of "Babylon You Must Go Down"

Hi manfas

Yes you are probably right.

"Babylon You Must Go Down" is such a good track as is "Dub One" that I was just hoping their may be others tracks to check out.

I.M.O this site along with the music of the period is just a wonderful continuous voyage of discovery.

I just met this man over the phone. My boyfriend is now his business manager and they are trying to put together a vintage show in Jamaica. I can forward your questions on to him if you like.
Hope to hear from you.

Hi Shirley,

That would be excellent.

The question is basically, did Desmond Irie release any other tracks apart from "Babylon You Must Go Down" ?

If so what are they and are they available in any format.

Regards
