Ites,
I am presently in Ethiopia for a few months and I try to connect with the roots undergound out there. LOts of jamaicans but often dancehall influence. I already met some persons from the 12 tribes but I would appreciate if any of you had good links out there. Already heard of Dr Desta', Changes, Jah restaurawnt, in Addis Ababa, but it seems like there are not much places and musicians.. Anyhow, if some of you know the place or already been to Ithiopia and wants to share some impressions, let me know,
Bless

Re: Ethiopia links
Have you been to Shashamane already ? There are some little shows there. Well, it's not the Soul Syndicate, but nice vibes. But to me, the city itself is one of the worst I've seen in my life. However, the rasta community is very different, it's much more peaceful. I had a very good time at the TTI headquarters, even if I'm not a member.
For other nice places to go, you should check Bahar Dar and Awassa. Arba Minch is beautiful too. And, of course, Lalibela, one of the wonders of the world. If you're still there for Timkat, it'll be an extraordinary experience.
Anyway, have a good time in Ethiopia !

Re: Ethiopia links
thanks,
yeah already been to bahar dar, lalibela, gondar, dessie, but I spend most of my time in addis cause of working in ngo. I also think it is the only place to find music, except shashamane as you mentionned, but I'm still hesitating to go there, I had different kind of echoes.. do you think it's worse, are the rastas really open hearted and the sounds interesting ? nyabinghi sessions ?
any other info appreciated, specially about musicians or bands in addis (which for the moment are like ghosts for me)
One Love
ps ; and if I cant find roots reggae, anyway, I'll go into orthodox chant music, very beautiful too and rootser than roots
ps 2 ; Jah restaurawnt has just closed, one place in less to enjoy the sounds out there...

I think it's definitely worth going to Shashamane, to see it. As I said before, and you surely heard it from many people, the city itself makes you feel like running away as fast as possible. There are bad looking bars and brothels almost everywhere, high criminality, and many agressive people... horrible.
But two miles north, the rasta community ("Jamaica" as ethiopians call it) is much more quiet and friendly. I only had one bad experience with a half crazy woman who cursed me ("baldhead", etc...)
All the other rastas I met (TTI, Nyahbingi, Bobo) were very friendly. I think if they feel that your interest is genuine, and that you don't consider them as a "tourist attraction", they're happy to talk to strangers, even if their skin is white and their hair short (which is my case).
This is only my short experience there, but I think that if you fly home without seeing Shashamane, you'll regret it. Good or bad, it will be a strong experience anyway.
