I just got the reissue - while overall it sounds good, there still is the issue with the vocals. Perhaps Mark and kalcidis are right in pointing out it might've been a technical malfunction with the equipment, though to me it almost sounds like there's a tremolo type effect on the vocals. I wonder if Linval did that on purpose going for something unique?

Questionable production choice vs. questionable studio engineer...

The 12" versions of *Perilous Times* on Thompson Sounds an Greensleeves both have the bad sounding vocals, although they are mixed differently.

I just noticed the Mystic Eyes sleeve photo shares the same location as the Lambert Douglas and Dingles sleeve photos. A place called Bryan Studio. Possibly the black chair was broken by the Blue Dingle's unorthodox chair usage and replaced with the brown chair seen in the Mystic Eyes and Douglas photos?

Nice spotting, Billy. Found this in the Jamaican yellow pages:

Great albums all of them.

I only knew Judgement Time from the Burning Sampler l.p. and thought the uneven vocals were due to the amount of music crammed onto that like the old K-Tel albums, but I've listened to the whole album on Spotify a couple of times now and it does sound pretty rough. Shame because there are some good songs there.

I have come across "I Hold The Handle" in a 12 inch mix on the
Thompson Sounds label (see the I-self 12 inch folder) where the group
is named "Roots & Soul". Perhaps "Mystic Eyes" was simply fabricated
for the UK release, to go nicely with the album title...
I thought that single was the Wailing Souls under a different name. Maybe the group name was changed to Mystic Eyes to prevent a mixup with the Wailing Souls.

Can't see the chair but I think Rod Taylor - If Jah Should Come Now is at the same spot as well.

The groups name is Mystic I (which of course sounds like mystic eyes),
all their songs were released under a variation of that name.
Afaik only one song was credited to Roots & Soul.
The confusion with Wailing Souls happened because 'Hold the Handle' was miscredited to them on the Linval Thompson presents ‎– Jah Jah Dreader Than Dread cd (http://roots-archives.com/release/427).

Nice one, jps. The chair does in fact make an appearance on the back of the sleeve!
