Re: RICO - Man From Wareika
Yeah, I love this album, especially the track "Africa". I think it's almost like a Jamaican jazz album, although still with the tight rhythms.
And one thing nobody has mentioned yet is the Artwork!! One of the finest album covers I own.
I've just noticed that my copy is not listed here at roots-archives.
mine is on Sonic Sounds (cat#- SS 01) (c)1977(p)

hi bellyman
don't you think the song"lumumba"is from count ossie originally?even though rico had a stint with the count ossie and the mystic revelation of rastafari in the wareika hills in the 60's before migrating to the uk and when he visited jamaica in 1976 to record part of the sessions for the"man from wareika"lp.it is featured on"tales from mozambique"

hi leggo
it seems to me that the era you are talking about is the one which saw him with the2 tone label and recorded with the specials.
don't you have any footage featuring him in late 70's ,early 80's

Fadel. I have no reggae footage of any kind. I tend to listen rather than watch, but I would like to change that and start to collect some good reggae on film.
Actually, I think when I saw him in early 80s he was maybe just finished with the Specials. i can't be sure. But i can be sure it was a most spectacular gig that had us all gob-smacked at his immense talent.
And what impresses me so much is that when I saw him last year (or was it 2005?) he was STILL right at the top of his game.
He played with Tan Tan and was backed by some UK musicians who did a great job. But it was Tan Tan and Rico that really owned the stage that night.
I disagree with an earlier post calling Wareika Dub 'boring mixes'. Subtle, maybe, but the tunes are far to strong to ever ever be boring.
Now I am going to google him to see if he is playing again in the UK soon (or Amsterdam which is actually as easy to get to from here as London!) If anyone has gig info on this man, please tell me, and please make sure you go too!

Hi Leggo Rocker
Doesn't he play in Jools Holland's band nowadays?

Dunno, you may be right there. It would fit into the way he works. And I am sure Jools would have total respect for a musician of Rico's calibre. Enought to invite him into his band.
