Maybe I am missing out, but I don't think I've heard any really awful dub! But then I tend to stick to stuff by the revolutionaries and the radics. I've heard some bad reggae, but none of it truely dub.

To avoid any further confusion - there are two Rhino labels owned by Warner / Atlantic - US Rhino & UK Rhino. Both specialise in putting out quality vintage Atlantic / Warner re-issues. These labels have nothing to do with putting out Jamaican music.

There is another (unassociated) Rhino label and it is this company who are responsible for putting out a number of sub-standard reggae releases. Hopefully they have stopped trading now!

Hi Sean

I have a lot of absolutely superb music on Rhino. (None of it reggae).

The last album I bought (as mentioned earlier in on this thread) was "King Curtis Live At Fillmore West" (Deluxe Edition)and it is an absolute scorcher -http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetai ... mber=77632

The only reggae albums they appear to be involved with are both by Steel Pulse; "True Democracy (Expanded & Remastered)"; "Earth Crisis (Expanded & Remastered)" - http://www.rhino.com/store/ArtistCatalo ... el%20Pulse

All of which reinforces what both Juha and Jackie P pointed out earlier.

Greetings to all in the name of the most high :-)

Having read a fair amount of the posts on this subject, it mostly seems to be 'artist bashing' which is very easy to do when the person/s in question are not here to defend themselves.

What is the criteria you are using to determine a 'good/bad dub'?

Could it be that, because some dubs are not made to the standard formula that you are familiar with that you are calling them bad!

Lee 'Scratch' Perry and others are innovators to be celebrated for their great and ground-breaking achivements with limited equipment.

This is not a flame or an attack on the posts made (everyone is entitled to their opinion) I just couldn't sit idly by and not say something.

Big Up to this site and it's creator/s.

music -maker,
to me bad dub is tinny, with a weak/almost non existent bass;tuneless or unmelodic;endlessly repeated on every album you see thats yet another "original" dub album..the bag o wire riddim truly does my skull in , as i dont even like it yet there johnny clarke is on about 15 albums ive heard, crooning out bag o wire. Crap dub can also have weak sound effects, eg very few echo effects, trashy vocals with no echo, etc.how much dosh have we all spent on tinny, weak dub , i wonder?like you, i,m not dissing artists nor anyone else..cheers Sean

sean,

In that context I am in agreement with you, there are 'A Lot' of badly engineered dubs out there.

It's highly likely, that in a lot of these cases the constant re-hashing and re-releasing of the same old (badly done) albums/tracks is not down to the artists/engineers themselves.

I feel it for those artists/engineers who now recognise an album has been badly done, they must cringe at the continual re-releasing of said albums/tracks.

Yo baas, more echo, more bass.

Cheers Musik-Maker :-)
