Jamaican Recordings label

anyone have some thoughts/advice on this label? i know everything is licensed from the producers, and labeled as "rare unreleased dub straight from the master tapes", but i've heard/read a lot of unattractive stuff about this label.

that being that most of the stuff (mainly the Bunny Lee stuff) are obvious outtakes, mis-takes, unfinished versions, instrumental takes (not even dubs!), etc. - basically licensing leftovers that were clearly never released for a reason.

i've heard good things about the Niney set, and i own the recent Soul Syndicate set, and that one sounds good to me. seems like maybe Niney is generally less unscrupulous than Bunny Lee is...?

anyway, any tips on what's good on the label, what to avoid, or just general discussion on the label...

I have 4 words of advice regarding this label:
Don't waste your money
Aside from 2 seemingly legit and honest releases (the 2 Niney produced dub collections), This label puts out nothing the bullshit. Bland new dub mixes that are sold as "lost mixes". They should be lost.

i imagine the Linval Thompson and maybe Tappa Zukie releases could be good material as well?

it seems Bunny Lee will license anything to anyone and let anyone call it anything...

yes, new as in recent fairly dull mixes using modern effects processing.

Hi guys,

I actually bought two CD`s on this label before I found out about the bogus nature of the releases.

They were Barry Brown "Steppin up Dubwise" and Don Carlos "Inna Dub Style".

I don`t think these 2 releases are actually that bad. But then that is just my opinion.

Leaving aside the dubious claims in the sleeve notes, I judge Jamaican Recordings material in the same way I judge everything else. That is do I like the music? Some of it I do, some of it I don't and my judgement as a Reggae buyer for over thirty years is that the label is far from the worst offender for padding albums out with crap.
