Flying cymbal

Post by pf »

I've seen this term many times but I have never known what that refers to exactly, how is the sound...It seems it was Santa directed by Bunny Lee the one to develope that. Can you explain to me or refer to well-known songs with it?
Cheers

well it is the fact to open the charley (on the drum) a long time, a bit like in ska but as the tempo is slower the charley has to stay opened a longer time which gives an effect of flying. The engineer usually add an effect on it to emphasize. Lots of songs from johnny clarke or cornell campell around 1975 have this sound.if i remember well nearly the whole album "natty dreadlocks ina greenwich farm" from cornell campbell is flying cymbal. Jacob Miller "none shall escape the judgement" is also flying cymbal at least when you go to the chorus if my memory is still working a little.

Hi pf

I am pretty sure Johnny Clarke's "None Shall Escape The Judgement" was the first song with "flying cymbal". I believe it is made hitting the hi-hat when it is fully open.

It talks about it extensively in the Dave Katz's Solid Foundation book which I can dig out for you tonight to quote verbatim if no one else adds more detailed accurate info during the day.

that web site used to be available trough www.johnnyclarke.com but perhaps they lost the rights to that address.

Even the roots-archives still point to that link now dead.

PF Flier!

So many drum stylings, and they have names! And all these years I've just had to explain these by playing songs to the drummer and saying, "Do it like this. It's a crooked beat. Emphasis on the third beat." This is soooo cool. When I saw flying cymbal, I thought of our drummer's little "pish" cymbal flying and crashing on stage because her drum hardware is so worn out!

Do you know names/descriptions for intros? How about the big crash on the third beat?

Now I have to go play a Linval Thompson disc to hear this.
