most under rated vocalists in reggae, maytones.

cant understand why the maytones are so under rated. vern buckley on his own has a special voice, but when paired with gladstone grant as the maytones they really do it for me. anybody who is not familiar with their work should check them out. the sweetest vocals i've ever heard. favourite tunes: searching so long, throw down your arms, all over the world, who cant hear must feel, how long.
big shout to ranking trevor down deh ina J.A. (A WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE) and all other roots archives users. ites deh. big up nyah.

I agree with you, The Maytones have recorded som great tunes. I was glad to see at least Heartbeat giving them attention when they released their CD: Their Greatest Hits.
But I must say I like Mr buckley as a solo singer too, like on the CD Madness 2.

Great music :-)

Mi love The Maytones..besides the chune "Money Worries" feat. I-Roy on the extended version, I really love "Throw Down Your Arms"..

The Gaylads are underrated as well..

hi there T and JahB, have the madness 2 LP and i agree vern buckley does some lovely updates of some of the old maytones classics and a few newer ones too. big up. and jah brown, i love the gaylads too, and melodians etc. although theres some great 80's, 90's and modern music, the rocksteady and 70's riddim will always be up there with the best. pure vibes.

Vernon Buckley has put together some nice compositions in his time...very underated, but as ITAL KEMAR said, even the updated versions of his tunes rock- in particular I like his Drum & Bass 12"s that came out of California. aDambom

"Who can't hear must feel" is a total killer track... one of my favorite 12"s... I also enjoy very much a song named "Save Us Jah" from trojan's Roots Rarities box set (if my memory's still good...)..

For sure another great under-rated vocalist, although it's not every maytones song I like (I don't like specially the "too melow" ones...)... But they do have a lot o great works... just remembered that "suffering so" is also one of my favorites...

Blessings,

I also love deeply this song from vernon buckley save us jah, he's plaintive sweet voice. actually it is on the Rastafari boxset I think. Throw down your arms, who can hear must feel, all those tunes are of a very high spirit and quality. But I was quite disapointed with most of the stuff I could find. Mainly old compilations that are ok but not the same vibe. Which albums or compilations feature such incredible songs as the one cited below?
thanks

hi benjamin, one or two of the maytones best LPs must be 'keep the fire burnin' which has 'throw down your arms' on it, also 'only your picture' which also has 'throw down your arms' and also 'who cant hear must feel' but i have to say one of my favourites is the 'mighty maytones showcase' which has 6 tracks plus the dubs, and one of my favourite tunes 'promises'. another LP which is not as strong but has a few lovely tracks is the 'tune in and rock'. the track 'walk with i jah' is just sweet. anybody know who done the original? a female vocalist, rocksteady era i think, 'walk through this world with me, go where i go'. have it on an old tape from years back but no track listing.
