Ites...
Do you guys record dubplates with the 70s artists that are still livin in our world?
Im not too hot for dubplates, but think its a good archive to keep, especially if an exclusive riddim sticks well to the song, and a nice tribute for the artist. It also gives him directly, in hand, some dunza...
I hate the sounds that play dubplates made with big chunes & artists like *Max Romeo's - Chase the devil* with lyrics like "Litelet Sound is the greatest of the world"... The soundbwoy dubplates... And would never ask an artist to do this...
And I would always prefer to meet the artist before recording either than sending money in Jamaica with a Sound name...
But am guessing about recording now, before they will have left dis reality...
Did any of you cut some good dubplates of 70s artists? And what? Just guessing...

Re: Dubplate recordings
Old time dubplate recording is a different mix than releas mix 7"/12"/lp.
Or dubplate is the introduction of the upcoming song 7"/12"/lp.

Re: Dubplate recordings
Litelet,
I think what Lion means is that the record producer, prior to releasing a new song, would give a copy of that song to the likes of King Tubby who would make an exclusive mix of that track (the dubplate) for sound system play.
This would then build up interest amongst the general public prior to its release.
It what basically an arrangement that had financial and economic advantages for those involved.

Re: Dubplate recordings
So what Litelet is talking about is known as a "SPECIAL"
but they are often refered to as DUBPLATE also.

Re: Dubplate recordings
Yes,
The dubplate or special is basically the same.
It could be an exclusive vocal mix of the song or a dub that the DJ / toaster would then sing over on the sound system.
Believe it or note in the early eighties during the heyday of early dancehall, if my memory serves me right, their were more dubplates floating around of the Mighty Diamonds than any other group / artist.

Re: Dubplate recordings
Thanks Dave for your explanation.
To day you will only hear specials ina the dance.
a popular artist sing/dj to big up the sound.
By some soundclash you hear the same rydim/artist
on special only the name of the soundsystem is drifferent.
