50 years of Reggae Music?

Post by leggo rocker »

According to what I have recently read, reggae - then in it's Ska format, first broke in 1958.

So that means 2008 would be a 50th anniversary of this particular musical episode, right?

There should be a string of events, gigs, radio shows, podcasts, you name it, to celebrate that half-century.

Don't you agree?

Sounds like an interesting concept, I wonder if any of the survivors from that era might confirm or deny 1958 as a suitable date for the birth of it all?

Some might know of earlier key events that they might point to as a birth of it all - I would certainly love to hear what they have to say - so come on old timers!

There may also be those who would see the first appearance of the word Reggae (or similar) as the birth of reggae? To my knowledge 'Do the Raggay' by the Maytals is the first know appearance (1968 or poss 1969?) - anybody help out here?
