I think the hardest roots album is the Makasound compilation of black Roots called In the frontline or Augustus Pablo - King Tubby Meets Rockers Uptown !!

how about recording/mixing wise?

a stand out lp for me is Capital Letters - Vinyard

but there is too many to name... with a huge chunk coming out of channel one studio.

I find most albums backed by roots radics hard.Like Eek A Mouse's Skidip.

I don't know what exactly is meant by "hard" but Ijahman Levi's "Haile I Hymn" gives me the goosebumps every time.

Thought about this one for a while, and I agree that Hard Times by Pablo Gad is pretty hard. However, I'm going to go with The Wailers, Catch a Fire. Killer tracks, and the Wailers in the early 70s were TUFF.
