Play that guitar Mr Rootsman

Post by leggo rocker »

COming as I do from a good old rock and roll background, I can't help liking a good guitar riff in a reggae track.

Here's (a rather obscure) one I just listened to that rips away a great riff:

Data 1981 by Z Green on Express records (outta Amsterdam!)

It's the B side to 'Bye Bye My Love' By David Isaacs on a 12 inch single that plays at 33rpm!

Totally WIKKID! So good I played it through twice!

Anyone know anymore great guitar licks out there in reggae land?

Cat Coore has a nice little solo on "Shine Like A Blazing Fire" from Third World's Rock the World lp.

Carl Harvey 's Ecstacy of Mankind album features the rawest, most rocking guitar i believe ive ever heard in roots music. each song features his insane, face melting licks. it is over the top (good or bad, you decide) for even rock music. If you like heavy riffs, this album is for you. He play on several other albums (i can think most of willie williams messenger man)
thanks and praise

I too like Carl Harvey's album because it is something different, yet very good. The tracks are all in heavy roots style that we are all accustomed to, but with lead guitar throughout. Good stuff here, and a nice change of pace from straight dub!

Third World for some very electric guitar

up through the '79 or '80 releases, depending on ones taste for how "produced" they sound. They lost me after Prisoner in the Street, which is a good live album. I checked the studio albums after that, but they never did it for me.
Peace,

James

The 12" Dave Barker i had mentioned before is like the rocked out sleng teng version.Hard guitar doing the sleng teng rythym.

Speaking of guitars i had seen Peter Toshs M16 shaped guitar up for auction kinda recently.

Check out "Wise & Foolish" by Misty In Roots.

The most superb guitar playing I have ever heard on a reggae album.

@ Collu - Wow, Where did you see that guitar auctioned? I saw it on the Steppin' Razor film and thought it was just so far out!

@ Cloudy - Looking forward to it!

@ the rest, thanks for the replies.

ALso of course, there's some great lead guitar on many Bob Marley tracks.

Well leggo - you will enjoy the new MightyZ All Stars line up! Our guitarist is an ex blues man and is injecting some lovely riffs into the All Stars dub music. Having said that, have you listened to Horseshoe Dub on the Mighty Dub album? I revived some of my old lead guitar skills for this one (although Roger plays it even better for the live set).
