SEEKING CLARIFICATION ON BACKING BANDS!!!!!!

Post by dubaddikt »

I am one of those people who is most interested in backing bands.Looking at the backing band i calculate the chances of an album being a killer or not.For instance all abums backed by roots radics are killers to me(I dont know about you!!)I am now confused because if i compare the members in RootsRadics,Revolutionaries,High times band etc i see that players like sly and Robbie, horsemouth wallace etc are part of all these bands.
Question:Were these bands independent groups or just rearrangement of people?

Dubaddikt
Buy the book Solid foundation ( an oral history of reggae)and you find your answer.
And search the topics of this archive about the bands like:/www.roots-archives.com/forum/read.php?2 ... #msg-22702

Look and see.

greetings dubaddikt,

I am a lot like you, I love the backing bands and base a lot of my vinyl purchases by who the backing band is. My understanding is that a lot of the same musicians were in all of these bands. I think there are a couple of different things that determine what the band is called. First of all I think it depends who the producer is. It the producer was Junjo then the band obviously would have been called the roots radics. Because Junjo has had success selling albums with the name the roots-radics as the backing band, I don't think he would change the name of the band. Even if there was a slight change in the musicians in the band, I think he would have kept the name the same.
This is just my opinion, correct me if im wrong.

I think that the bands were studio bands. With for example Aggrovators at King Tubby's and Roots Radics at Channel One. Thats how i see it cause i have wondered about the exact same question

King Tubby Studio was only mix and voice studio.

Most names where given by producers.

Backing bands never get the publicity or credit they deserve in reggae as far as I am concerned. They are the true foundation. I have never understood why they are rarely advertised or listed as seperate entities on the flyers. For instance I love the Gumption Band (plays with Beres a lot) and the Sane bane (plays with various artists). Having gone to reggae shows large & small since 1984 I know the hard work it takes to stay fresh on a stage as artist after artist comes up to do their thing. I've gone to the Reggae Sunsplash (Jarrett Park), Reggae Sumfest (Mo Bay), Western Conciousness and all the Negril venues; the backing bands make very show a success or a flop!

The roots radics are my favorite too but also i think they went most of time with producers and shows

When touring with gregory they were called "the Gregory Outfitts" in another one they were called 'the Channe One Players". The only way u can figure out what band in my Opinion is the Drumming Patterns combined with lead guitar.

Prince Far I LP musical history has no mention of the roots radics but as soon as u hear "Prince Far I Come Again" u immediately recognize the beat

most of the backing bands in the 70s early 80s were all pretty much the same rotating plate of musicians. they were all session players.
some of the bands that are all the same players give or take a few musicians are soul syndicate
the aggrovators, revolutionarys.
on alot of albums it only mentions musician names versus band names so sometimes its hard to tell who was the backing band.
