Tony McDermott

Post by Ras Star »

There's a lot of love for Wilfred Limonious on this site, but my personal favorite Reggae Album Designer /Artist is Tony McDermott who has done great artwork for Greensleeves and ARIWA over the years and is still active in Greensleeves Reggae Riddim albums.

I'd agree wth you his drawings on those old albums are great, full of detail and humour.

One of my favourites is the general 12" sleeve for Greensleeves that depicts the develpment of Reggae over the years.

I'm involved in art and illustration and I've often thought it would be interesting to do an interview with him about those drawings.

Also have you seen this book about Reggae album covers

Have to agree - great art :o)
love the way the Forward sleeve has the various singers in poses from their own album covers - Michael Prophet, Michigan & Smiley, Dr Alimantado. Wailing Souls etc - nice touch!

I've also always wanted to read an interview and/or interview the man himself. Does the original artwork survive, what inspired him, who are the various people depicted? (Scientist's Vampires album for example) etc etc

You also rarely come across good scans of any of the original vinyl covers. Here's an excellent 2500x2500 (approx) scan of Scientist's Heavyweight Dub Champion. Also included in the zip is the rarely seen (unless you actually own it of course) rear of the original Scientist LP Meets The Space Invaders, which is also a neat piece of art. A front scan of the latter is also included 1850x1850 (approx).

If anyone has any more excellent scans of any of this artwork I'd love to have copies - as I'm sure many others here would as well. Good scans of the vinyl sleeves for Scientist's Vampires & Wins The World Cup would be neat to have.

I once tried to see if he had his own web site so as i could contact him. I tried Greensleeves but never got a reply.
I think i'll give it another shot as an interview would be great. It really would be interesting to get the story behind the work he produced and he really did loads when you think about it.
I think i'll give it another shot.
I've a vinyl of Wins the world Cup but my scanner is too small i'll see if some of my mates have one i could use. I'll let you know how I get on.

Borudub - sounds great :o)
Hope you find a larger scanner. Whenever I do vinyl scans it's a 4 piece jigsaw puzzle to fit it all back together - and the end result is rarely ideal ;o)

Another couple of classics

Here's a decent scan (2500x2500 approx) of the Greensleeves outer sleeve to their 12inchers & Disco 45's etc that was mentioned by Borudub

http://www.mytempdir.com/1353676

From Mento to Sound System, from Ska and Skinheads to Dreads and Punk. With Rico Rodriguez, Bob Marley, Lee Perry (?), Augustus Pablo and more. Is that one half of Roots Radics at the bottom right?

I like the little Dread in the background during the late 50s period - behind the white shirted trio - which speaks volumes for that particular time period. The accurate depiction of an early 60s combo, with Vox AC10 (AC30 ?) amp, Fender Telecaster, Hofner bass and three piece drum kit. The other thing I like about this combo is the mis-matched bass amplifier setup with the one 15inch speaker which was so common of the 60s era. Tony McDermott was either there or was working from an original photograph for sure. Lastly, the people coming out of the Greensleeves shop are carrying little copies of this Tony McDermott sleeve - neat!

There was an interview of the T McDermott in the last issue of the French mag "Natty Dread". A double page in the main article dedicated to Greensleeves' story.

Regarding the 12" cover with all the reggae story, it features:

from begining to the end

A mento group
A vocal trio (perhaps one of the many that toured the hotel circuit back in the days )
J Cliff (red shirt with yellow star)
Rico (trombon player)
L Aitken (with the microphone / just in front of a white mod)
J Miller (?), Bob, Big Youth and the I Tree form a nice line.
The band (right bottom hand corner) is the Revolutionnaries with Sly & Robbie
Pablo with his melodica
K Hudson just above the man with the green shirt.
The Sex Pistols (they played a role in Greensleeves development as the "Born For A Purpose" 12" was a huge sucess among punk thanx the Sex Pistol's superlative commentary on this disc)
Doc Tado at the microphone in front of the sound system.

I'm far from sure for all the people I mention. certainly some mistakes.
