Rock Steady Essentials

For starters I'd recommend anything by the Queen Of Rock Steady, Phyllis Dillon. Any of her recordings for Duke Reid's Treasure Isle work wonders for me. Pure magic!

Great start - Phyllis Dillon - especially Don't Stay Away and Perfidia on Treasure Isle, tough to think of a better female rock steady singer.

I'll throw in two male vocal groups into the mix The Techniques - so many wonderful tracks on treasure Isle by these guys - and The Melodians

To pick one track by each of these is tough, but I think I would go with Travelling Man by The Techniques (I also love the Wackies version on Junior Delahaye's 'Reggae' album) and You Don't Need Me by The Melodians.

Alton Ellis probably stands out as the most obvious name to put forward for a solo male vocalist (although he has done many fine duets).

Maybe but the best rocksteady in the world is to find on Treasure Isle but by Paragons, Alton Ellis and the Techniques. They are by far the best in rocksteady.

Reading Jackson's tip, it rememberd me of a collection by Trojan label,
called The Birth of Trojan - Duke Reid Rocksteady (1967), cd 2002.
About 6 of the 22 fine tracks is joined by Phyllis Dillon.
The album sounds a crossover in soul and rocksteady
(it's not on the list yet, moderators at RootsArchive )

* By Phyllis Dillon on a duet with Hopeton Lewis, i'm thinking about "On the right track".
* "When will be the end" by Leonard Dillon, recorded very lately (79 or 80) at Studio One on but absolutely essential.

* "Why birds follow spring" and "Cry tough" by Alton Ellis
* "Reach out" by Derrick Harriott
* "Can't you see" & "When i fall in love" by Ken Boothe
