Satta Massagana??

Post by Funkyfred »

Irie everyone.....

Which group or artist did originally record the Satta-tune? It is The Abyssians ya?
I know that Johnnie Clarke, Third World and Ras Michael also recorded it...

Or maybe it is an old Jamaican Niyabinghi-chant from the beginning?

Originally they recorded the song at Studio 1 but Coxsone didnt think it would sell so some years later they recorded it again (Not for Studio 1) and it hit up the place.

The Abyssinians recorded the song at Studio 1 with Sound Dimension and put it out as "Far Far Away" on a limited pressing on their own Clinch label.

Due to demand they repressed this same master on Clinch with the new title "Satta...."

Some say Satta Massagana is based on a track from a 1966 Bat Man movie: http://www.bloodandfire.co.uk/db/viewto ... +massagana

Also, there's an early incarnation of it on Studio One Groups by Carlton & The Shoes called Happy Land.

Abyssinians didnt re-record satta in 71, the first Clinch press is the 69 cut. They had to buy back the chune to Coxsone...
And when Coxsone saw the sucess they had, he then pressed some Satta records on his label...

My favourite version is from Cedric Im Brooks "United Africa" album - http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1 ... ight=20143

Check out the horns on that!
