Roland burrell / Burrells / Black Crucials Connection?

Post by jahadambom »

I have always been wondering if there was some relation of The Burrells to the Black Crucials....

I have a Hawkeye 12" Disco credited to Black Crucials: "Tonight" b/w "LAdy LAdy". The latter is actually "Johnny dollar" (it begins: "Lady, Lady, Lady, why do you..."), except tha it is an extended version of the same recording on the Burrells LP of the same Name.

This made me wonder...is this just a misprint or miscredit on behalf of Hawkeye records? ...or could these two bands share some of the same members?

I also have a black Crucial 12" disco on the MAsai label with two tunes: one that mixes with one of the 'Burrells' tunes and one that mixes with a Tony Tuff (one of the burrells) 12" Disco on the tanka LAbel; All of the MAsai and Tanka Productions are by Lowell Hill.

So far I have not read or heard who the three members are that make up the Black Crucials; All I have to go by is thier picture on the "Mr sonny" LP and thier voices. Pretty sure, out of the Burrells, that is is not Tony Tuff or earl 16, but it seems to me that it is a possibility that either Roland Burrell, Junior Moore or Both are part of the 'Black Crucials' -- I have not been able to confirm. Who are the black Crucials?!

Has anyone else drawn any connections regarding these artists? Can anyone offer any more insight into this topic? MAny Thanks.

I tried to get some information early in here
http://www.roots-archives.com/forum/rea ... 04#msg-504
and on B&F
http://www.bloodandfire.co.uk/db/viewto ... highlight=
but there was not much information coming in.
Still a mystery to be solved.

I am glad I am not the only one wondering this...BELLYMAN, did you ever make any (loose) connections or draw ( maybe sketch) any conclusions from you own research? I am curious to know what you think about what I wrote.

Regardless, Those posts are almost 2 and a half years old now and still no informations...I think it is time to reinvestigate. If anyone can help, i am confident it will be somebody here on the Roots-Archives Reggae Forum!!

I beginning to think that This one would have to come straight from the source (One of the artists) as it seems there is nothing written or published regarding this info. I wonder if anybody can get in touch with one of them....Tony Tuff, Junior Moore, Roland Burrell, Earl 16, Lowell Hill, JAmmy, Lowell Hill...as I'm sure they can provide some insight.

Jahadambom,
all I can add is that the lead singer from Black Crucial is neither Roland Burrell, nor Junior Moore or any other you mentioned (believe me, I learned my Rolands/Tamlins lessons).

That leading voice is so distinctive in its own right and I can't put any known name to it.

Fact is that both Rolands/Roland Burrell and Black Crucial had their 10" and 12" records released on the Masai and Tanka labels in the U.S. and that producer Lowell Hill only worked with a very few other artists including Junior Moore (as himself or as Tamlins), Derrick Lara (another one-time-Tamlin), Tony Tuff, Freddy McKay and Lloyd Robinson. Some of the 12" releases were picked up by Hawkeye records for distribution in the UK.

If you can believe the picture of the 'Mr.Sonny' album these guys were in their early 20s then. All other singers we are talking about had reached their 30s and more by the time of this release (1985).

Maybe we should contact Jammys ;)
