If you liked that, you may also like this....

Post by leggo rocker »

Sometimes you hear a song or an LP that really gets you. You love it and you think, "I wonder if there's anything else that sounds like this / this good"

So I thought I'd start a thread along these lines.

For instance...

If you liked:

http://www.roots-archives.com/release/1706

Then you'll probably like:

http://www.roots-archives.com/release/4620

OK, so that's a pretty obvious one, but hopefully you get my drift.

It's not as easy as it seems, but it may help some of us expand our horizons and listen to some stuff not previously heard or considered.

This is a really cool idea! I like it lots.

If you liked:
http://www.roots-archives.com/release/90

and:
http://www.roots-archives.com/release/168

then you might also like:
http://www.roots-archives.com/release/619

The first two contain the tracks Perry re-works in the third (along with other stuff as well, Bob Marley included) and they are both fantastic records in their own right.

and if you liked that, get ready for some genre bending, 'cause you might like:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharon_Jon ... _Dap-Kings
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antibalas

Funk and Afrobeat are two genres that incorporate Afro-Caribbean riddim and these two groups, coming from the same label in NYC are carrying the torch of the genres.

Sharon Jones is a potent mix of James Brown and Aretha Franklin with the tightest funk band since the JB's quit performin' and their sound and recording style is all vintage. Those gritty snare hits and powerful bass drum smacks are just as raw as 70s funk/reggae recordings.

Antibalas is incredibly rhythmically complex and comes from the tradition of Fela Kuti's original Afrobeat orchestras. Always interesting and always political, Antibalas lays down grooves in numerous styles and rhythms with an emphasis on ingenuity and unconventionality. "Who is dis America?" is a great album to start with as its grooves are accessible and undeniably amazing while the politics take a lyrical front seat.

Since I can't edit, I'm just gonna continue.

If you liked Blackboard Jungle Dub by Perry, then you'll love any of the Skatalites in dub that King Tubby did. I have absolutely every one of those albums I could find and each of them has amazing, amazing, amazing percussive layers added, all at King Tubby's top-notch caliber. I could be wrong on this, but I think a lot of 'em have Augustus Pablo on melodica which is just a plus if you're a Pablo fan, and I know I am.
