I was only 12 in 1975 - I only really got into Kraftwerk in 1978 - before they became popular with the rise of synth pop in 1980. I read about a gig they did in Paris in Sounds the music rag. They sounded cool, so when I saw The Model on a jukebox whilst on holiday in Italy, I played it and fell in love! Shortly afterwards I bought The Man Machine, and became a confirmed fan - I saw them in 1980 in Southampton - they were superb!

They even influenced my tastes in Reggae - whilst in one direction the Two Tone revival sent me down a road exploring old time ska and rocksteady, the sounds of Kraftwerk led me to a preference for heavy fx based dub - including the likes of Scientist and Adrian Sherwood - the influences of these producers can be heard in the dub I make!

Hey Mighty Z

I was 16. This is probably difficult to believe, but it was a total shock to see blokes on a stage with no instruments as such. Seriously. I can vivivdly remember myself and my mates gawping at the stage!

I also remember the audience becoming quite hostile when some of the sounds became just too painful!

Talking of electronic music and hostility I saw Suicide at Crawley Leisure Centre supporting The Clash and members of the audience actually got up on stage and beat the two of them up!!

By the way my first gig was when I was 13 or 14. Hawkwind at Southampton Gaumont!!! Unreal. I was deaf for 3 days.

Alan McGee's label has released so much great music. I've been spending a lot on ebay to get most of these LPs in mint condition but it was worth the price In general anything that can put you in the same mood as when you were 16-18 years old is worth the price.

My first gig was Gary Glitter at the age of 10

I had the disbelief/confusion experience when I saw The Human League in the very early days (1978) supporting Souxsie and the Banshees (with Spizzoil also). We could hear what sounded like drums, but no drummer could be seen. We eventually realised this was an all electronic band (luckily Krafwerk had prepared me for this idea!) - and that one of those machines in the scaffolding by the keyboard players must be making the drum sounds! This was when the two guys who eventually became Heaven 17 were in the band with Phil Oakey - they were much better in those days, not a pop band like they became later!

In general anything that can put you in the same mood as when you were 16-18 years old is worth the price.

Incidentally I think I have Human League's "Empire State Human" single at home somewhere. That was them wasn't it? Did they do "Being Boiled" as well? Sorry my mind is becoming addled!
