i will be getting more info on lacksley castell through trevor elliott of musical ambassador. who is now part owner of the negus roots label, along with original owner robert palmer. trevor said that as soon as he links up with robert, he will all the questions that i have requested of the mystery man, lol. robert of all people would know about lacksley, since he was the one responsible for albums like morning glory, princess lady, and a handful of his music on negus roots discos.
also one thing that was cleared up by trevor elliott. was the mix up of trevor junior being lacksley castell's brother, which is false. no ties between the 2. it is in fact, trevor castell, who did a chune called "cool and deadly" on a gorgon 7", and the 12" label shuttle.
as far as lacksley, we will see if there are any surviving pictures of the photo shoot for the morning glory album, as well as some other pics. cross your fingures.

No offense to anyone, but what I'm about to say is going to rub some people the wrong way I'm sure...

Why all the fuss over Lacksley Castell and Hugh Mundell? I just don't get it. Personally, I think everyone is in love with them mostly because they died young and people like to fantasize over what could have been. They could have been great, but I don't think either one made it to that level.

Granted, they both voiced plenty of tunes over some killer riddims. Aside from that, both of their voices still had A LOT of maturing to do.

I like both artists, but neither one would be in my top 40. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions... I must be missing something though. Explanations and contradictions are welcomed. :)

well,i listened to lacksley castell for months before finding out he was dead, so no,i don't like him mostly because he died young and never even gave it a thought.

and i can't explain why i like hugh mundell, i do know that i can listen to his songs over and over for hours, and i know that i can play them at a club with no complaints, for what it's worth

I agree with the lacksley comment a little, i don't get it either, why is he so popular?, he did a handful of good songs that i know of but i never rated him that much, but hugh mundell i disagree on your comment because i think hugh was very special, it wasn't just about his music but also who he was and what he stood for, i think thats what draws people to him alot, plus the fact he was a young guy singing about what he believed in and i can't think of any other artists in his category of his age group around in his time, he was one of the last young roots singers at the time where most roots artists where alot older than him so alot of the youth could relate more to someone from there own age group, thats my opinion on him anyway. i've always been a fan of hugh mundell but i also know lots of people who don't rate him at all.
But i think the fact that he died young also makes him that bit more popular and mysterious.

for me personally, when them first came out in the business, i like them from the start. the vibes come same way. mundell was pretty much the vocal leader of that style. it was junior reid, hugh mundell, and lacksley castell, who use to hang out together back inna the day, singing together in waterhouse. that's why some type of similar vocal style, in some ways. but also having them own original style as well. i give rispek to all artists whether alive or dead an gone. but if interest rises for another artist, dun bother come a forum and bad mind artist, coz they all left a mark in reggae history, whether famous or non established, but all left a mark or footprint in the reggae industry. they are all a part of reggae history. speaking truth and right, bout roots and culture, livity, speaking out against the babylonian shitstem, strictly positive vibrations. so when you talk bout what the fuss is all about of some artists that people wonder bout, its out of respect, thats why that curiosity is there. why else would you be on the lacksley castell thread. each people have them own thoughts on things, so i do give respect to there own thoughts and comments, but like i said, dun come round and bad mind artist living or gone, whether, yuh like there muzik or not, coz they are all a part of the reggae foundation.

everyone's entitled to their opinion, so don't worry about offending anyone, tingjunkie. i somewhat agree with you about lacksley. i bought "princess lady", and didn't think it was that good at first. its grown on me, but i like "morning glory" a lot better. the lacksely tracks on "jah fire" are awesome; the same with the single "what a great day" produced by jammy. that's probably my alltime favorite lacksley track.

however, i definitely can't agree with same statement being applied to hugh mundell. in my opinion, he is a legend of reggae. "africa must be free...", "mundell", "time and place" and "blackman's foundation" are full of reggae classics. a thread from a long ways back asked to rank your alltime favorite vocalists. my impression was that hugh mundell was one of the most represented among everyone's lists. so all the fuss about hugh mundell must be justified.

i cant believe my ears! ofcourse musical taste is very subjective

its funny you mention hugh mundell aswel
for me 2 excellent singers
both died young btw (strange argument for disliking him tho)

they have even similar voice and style somtimes i have difficulties to get them apart
lacksley got such brilliant tunes
im surprised they dont touch you
tunes like:

speak soflty
you over there
geenie in a jar
doctor love
million miles from home
morning glory
tug a war games
wicked man
jah children

to mention a few

strong vocals
sounds mature enough to me

to be honest you are the first i come across that dislikes him

well everyone is entitled to his opinion as you say
