More Joe Gibbs on the wheels of steel tonight:

United Dreadlocks Vol 2 - Various Artists - Joe Gibbs

This LP isn't on the RA database, Vol 1 is there but not Vol 2, or at least I can't find it.

However, it's essential for those who've got the taste for the African Dub series on the same label, as it's basically vocal versions of those riddims. So it's ideal for making up showcase mixes from those LPs.

Woke up this morning, turned on the amp and put the needle down on this:

Dancing Shoes, the first reggae record to be released on the Caroline (Virgin) label, is a fine example of early-mid-Seventies reggae. It's almost a soul record played with a reggae emphasis. The horns are reminiscent of the soul music arrangements from the era, so much so it could easily be a Stax or Motown record rather than a Caroline imprint. Seaton's vocals would be at home on any US produced soul record and there's some very soul-like keyboard sounds knocking around on several tracks.

Although the tracks feature a mix of loving and rootical lyrics, those that love deep roots might prefer to pass this one up as being just too smooth.

Typical of some albums of the era, not all tracks match up in quality, with some feeling distinctly like filla, not killa. Ironically for a reggae LP with a soul slant, the Stevie Wonder cover "I believe" is especially guilty of this charge. Indeed, as the LP runs on, the music seems to get weaker. However, if you're into Soul music as much as Reggae music, then you'll probably get on well with this album.

For those of us lucky enough to have been teenagers in the Seventies the album artwork alone, complete with a photo of two pairs of platform shoes, makes the LP worth seeking out!
