According to the liner notes to the Makasound compilation "Rub-A-Dub Soldiers", "A late branch of dancehall roots reggae, Rub-A-Dub appeared at the junction of the 70s and the 80s."..."Rub-A-Dub style was characterized by a powerful, round, low and deep bass, as well as a very simple drumming, with the bass drum and the snare drum alternating on the first beat of each bar."..."According to Linval Thompson, Rub-A-Dub is just a highly swinging Dub (drum and bass), particularly well suited for dancing (dancehall)."
The Roots Radics from this period (early 80s) are probably one of the bands most associated with the Rub-A-Dub style. Although Sly and Robbie also recorded a decent amount of music in a Rub-A-Dub style.
I hope this helps.

Re: rub-a-dub ????????
My basic definition of Rub-A-Dub would be... Jamaican music produced mainly between 1980 and 1985 in which synthesized instruments are starting to replace "real" instruments. The vocal style often involved DJ-ing as well as singing (often called sing-jay), and the musical style and lyrical content was often more pop-like compared to roots reggae. Rub-A-Dub evolved into the dancehall era ushered in by the first fully digital riddims in 1985. In short, rub-a-dub bridged the gap between the organic heavy roots reggae, and the lively digital modern dancehall.
As I convert my whole Jamaican music collection to MP3's so I can put it on my new player, I often run into the problem of trying to decide whether or not I should label a particular early 1980's song "roots reggae," "rub-a-dub," or "classic dancehall." Trying to put every Jamaican tune into a specific genre can be very tricky.
