Re: What does your family/friends think about your reggae love?
I am lucky that I am still in touch with a number of friends who I have known since my youth. As they were all converted to Reggae (with one exception - our sound man - who entered into a love of Reggae simultaneously to me thanks to John Peel mostly) during the 'Nelson Road Project' days (as mentioned in another thread
) we all still share a love of the music - so I never feel alone in my love of the music. I know what you mean about being the DJ though bullit - it is hard work (especially playing old time tunes that are often only 2 minutes long) and you see everybody else, but have llittle contact with them as they are the other side of the console.

I try to dance as much as possible when behind the decks. This helps me feel less isolated and more in contact with the dancefloor.

I am from Denmark.
My wife ask me very often to tune the computer into Irie FM.
My wife can alsoo hear det difference between riddims, and she can hear the artist.
My other family don`t understand reggae
Some of my friends are hard core reggae fans - other do not understand a word.

Re: What does your family/friends think about your reggae love?
My wife can't stand reggae and it's become a running joke at our house.
When we first met (11 years ago) she knew that I DJed between sets for the reggae acts that would come to our town. At the time (she was still a teen), she thought this was great and it helped me get more dates with her as I could sneak her into shows.
About 3 years later she informed me that I had worn her out on reggae. The girl who once sang Steel Pulse's "Taxi Driver" and went to go see Burning Spear with me was completely done.
She continues to hope that i will eventually outgrow it too, but usually gives up hope when she looks at the growing space my collection takes up.
At least right now she's pretending to tolerate it.

Re: What does your family/friends think about your reggae love?
Lots of memories-- really nice topic...
I started listening Reggae at the age of 8 (now I'm 24) my dad used to have lots of vynils, mainly black music, some r&b, funk and some reggae like bob, black uhuru, third world and ub40. The thing is that mom and dad used to dance at home, and my mom loved "rat in the kitchen" of the ub's so we started to get into Reggae because it kinda became the soundtrack of our home. So we started to collect reggae vynils...
Nowadays I still listen to Reggae more and more, don't know how many records do I own, between vynils, cd's, mp3 and the like. I'll never stop, and about ten years ago I embraced Rastafari, so I can easily relate to roots & culture and rastafarian lyrics, still I listen to all Jamaican music (ska, rocksteady, dancehall) except slack modern stuff like t.o.k. and voicemail and crap like that.
My empress loves it, she rasta too, although every now and then she says "bwoi yuh really nuts" regarding to my Reggae fanatism.
Other members of the family think that It's kinda fashion thing, but being a Rasta for about ten years and listening to Reggae for about sixteen I don't know know when are they going to understand. They believe it's kinda hippy thing, that "one day I will forget"...
Well, he who feels it knows it... Selassie I liveth ev'ry time!!!
Yes I
By the way, I'm from Chile, South America.

I also think that some friends and family member might think this is only a "temporary thing". I am originally from Peru, Soth America, and although I live in NYC for so many years, some of my friends down there thought that my "reggae thing" won't last long just like the majority of reggae/rasta wanna be's down there. It's been 16 years since my first exposed to JAH 's music, and it's going strong by collecting vinyl, cd's and mp3 singles as well as have Rasta as an ideology. My friends are crazy about music too, but nobody collects only one type of it

Re: What does your family/friends think about your reggae love?
My wife gets on me about my obsession with music in general. Reggae is my mainstay but I listen to everything from John Prine to Frank Zappa. The kids are young 3months, 4 years, 6 years and I can always find songs they dig regardless of style! The world needs obssesive people who specialize. The folks on this site who only listen to reggae help the rest of us who dabble. How else what we know what to buy? Jam on!

Re: What does your family/friends think about your reggae love?
Been listening to Reggae and Ska so long anyone who knows me is used to the idea by now. Wife likes it of course, and most of my friends.
The rest think it's a bit odd, but the funny thing to me is that they've started checking my podcasts and a few even ask when the next one is due or what the theme will be!
Either they like it, or I'm keeping them amused. I'm good with it either way.
The one constant with the podcast, as it's title "JA-UK-JP and more..." suggests, is that I try to get something in there from those three countries every time, with a little extra depending how the mood moves me.
Just trying to spread the sounds around.
