If you were to do an hour of The Upsetter...

Post by Selector J »

I am going to dedicate an hour to Lee "Scratch" Perry and The Upsetters for my radio program (Sep. 29 on kvrx.org).

I only have about 45-50 minutes to define The Upsetter so I wanted to take a survey of what other brethren would play. My only restriction is that I'm not able to play "popular" artists (i.e. The Wailers) because of some asinine red tape. The songs can be performed, directed, or produced by Scratch.

I have a play list in mind but I'm sure it's lacking somewhat. I'd like to concentrate on his 70's output but I'm game for anything that thumps.

So, in your opinion what songs would you include if you only had an hour to define Mr. Pipecock Jackson?? (And were not able to include The Wailers)?

Gracias,
Selector J

Don't forget his great work with Earl George Faith!

I'm surprised you can even do 40 minutes of him. Radio live365.com pulled my Revolutionaries mix up because of 'more than three successive tracks by one artist'. If you followed that to the letter you'd have difficulty playing more than three reggae songs back to back, peroid! These petty rules have no consideration for the way JA music was produced!

hi selector j.
you could include some congos, jah lion, george faith, and there are some lovely versions on 'build the ark', 'produced and directed by the upsetter', 'open the gate' and 'arkology'. you are spoilt for choice really. an hour??? you could do with a week.... anyways good luck with it.

"Know Love" Twin Roots, "Thanks & Praise" Junior Ainsworth, "Open The Gate" The Congos
I'm not really familiar with Perry's early stuff except for the Wailers.

Hi,Selector J,

I agree with Leggo Rocker, definitely some George Faith !
"I`ve Got The Groove " springs to mind but at 5'40",it would need cutting down a bit.Trouble is, there is so much to choose from.Good luck !!
