Sugar Minott

Post by markke »

Although i have been collecting reggae since the 70's, and digging out some of the old DBC shows, has reminded me that sugar Minott has put some good stuff out in his time, perhaps its an age thing. But i would love to collect a few of his albums. Could anybody recomend say his top 5 albums.
Thanks

I'm a HUGE Sugar Minott fan (even after he stood us up and didn't show for his London gig last year, grrr).

Here are just five, but I could pick ten, no problem. These might not be the first choice of everyone, as many will go for Live Loving, African Princess etc, but for me these are real gems.

You should also seek out his many works on 12 inch 45 as that is where a lot of Sugar's sweetest stuff is hiding.

BTW, I just counted 20 LPs in my Sugar Minott section, so there's plenty more worthy of adding to the five above.

Nice 5 Leggo, I would prefer Live Loving and Black Roots to... Ehh, I dunno:) Maybe to Slice of the Cake, I don't think it's really among his VERY best albums.

And Easy Star collection Rare Gems is certainly worth of picking.

Maybe you need to give Slice of the cake another listen or three?

Tracks like:

Inna Dance Hall Style
Slice Of The Cake
No Vacancy

...are all massive! Inna dance Hall style has gotta be one of Sugar's hardest hits. And Slice of the Cake and No Vacancy are such great roots tunes.

and also:

Give Thanks And Praise
How Could I Let You Get Away
We A Fi Live

show Sugar's style at its best...

...and all the other tracks are not just very good, they're excellent!

What's more, this LP has some of the *best* Sugar 12 inch disco versions around I've ever heard!

DanceHall Showcase Vol 1 & 2 are excellent.

Also Uptempo Showcase is very good.

I have all those albums listed upto 1987 and I really don`t think there is bad one amongst them.

Sugar has the sweeetest voice whatever the riddim.
