wooohh, i didn't want to hurt you and my criticism was not aimed at you ! It was only my thoughts about that kind of prices.

Anyway, if i had this LP, firstly, i wouldn't sell it and if i really had to, i think i wouldn't put a reserve price.

I can feel a bit of irony at the end, meaning i'm also part of the system i criticize and you're right. No, i don't live a simple life as i live in Paris and my work pays well, i'm a consumer yes, but i try to feed what i called earlier babylon system the less i can, I use Linux only (excerpt at work where i'm forced to use MS), i don't have TV, don't have a car and go to McDonald maybe twice a year, i never buy CDs in megastores and never pay more than 20 euros for a LP (very rarely more than 10€), that wasn't really well chosen examples but i'm far from being countryman in others aspects of my life.

I love old records, especially early Trojan or Pama presses and deep 70's roots, it's been maybe 3 years i'm collecting them but I'd rather spend years looking for it at a cheap price than paying a lot on ebay for it, even if i were rich enough. I guess i think that i deserve them because of the time i spend looking for those records, not thanks to my bank account but i have the chance to live in a place where it's not too hard to find (i didn't say easy :) ). Anyway, that's just my point of view and i respect yours :).

I read a post by you where your proposal was to let someone win a bid without overbidding him to lower the price, that's a good idea, even if it may be hard to set up. That's the first step for stopping speculation.

Cheers,
Antonin

You didn't cause me any offense at all Antonin, no worries.

Glad to hear you are limiting your support of the Babylon system! It is not easy, in fact it is very difficult, but we must all try a little...

I did try very hard with a non-competition-pact with one ebay buyer to avoid bidding up records but it ended up not really working. Mainly because he would say "I am bidding on this, this, this this, this and this, please don't bid against me" - picking out ALL the best records as soon as they were listed! I don't tend to see the records until the last day as I only look at the final 24hrs of auctions, usually.

So in the end I had to bid against him (and paid dear for that as we inflated the price of a particular LP by an awful lot!) and that ended our cozy deal.

And that illustrates the problem. If two guys REALLY want a record, eBay is the prefect place to drive up the price as they will bid and bid against each other bbenefitting only the seller in the end.

I've seen this same auction that was held five years ago, and im sure it was the same seller (midnightdread) but at that time he started the auction with a low starting bid (like U$ 100.00) and the auction ended for U$ 1,000.00 and something and still didn't reach the reserve price, so I guess he decided no to sell it, and waited untill now to put it on auction again...

The only thing is that, this time, he seems to be using a different tactic by putting this crazy starting bid... not sure if they are the same interviews from the album "Interviews" from tuff gong, all I know is that this album from tuff gong has some "extracts" only, while this LP seems to be 2 complete interviews...

Anyways, just curious to see if anyone will buy it... (I rather buy a whole collection with that amount... :))

Im like you Leggo, got a few "pacts" with user, not to overbid ourselves. And like you I sometime have problem, entering the item in my sniper that will overbid a friend that bidded on after...

Then concerning those crazy prices...
For me its virtual... When I spend much for a record, I dont link this money with material life like *you could buy this or this with this amount*... I live with about 1300$ of income monthly (which mean nearly poor here ina Switzerland), and it doesnt change anything... Except that I have to resell continualy part of my collection (at mad virtual prices too, so its kind of balance) and reinject this money in my "reggae account", keeping only my *fittest of the fittest*. Im quite certain that most *crazy buyers* are not as rich as people, out of this business, are thinking...

Yes, that is poor man style in your country!!

And, many many of us collectors can't afford to do this at all. I am by no way rich by UK standards although I except if I took my income to the third world I could live like a king.

And like any real addict, I have been gradually stripping my life of anything of value to sell to fund my vinyl habit.

I've even given up the motorcycle as it has come to the point when I'd rather have seven thousand pounds worth of records that give me pleasure all the time than a bike I ride a few times a year...
