I would have to agree that Sugar has one of the best voices in the business, and knows how to use it. Jah certainly blessed this man with a superb voice.
He's the David Bowie of reggae. By that I mean he has a voice of quite amazing range and dexterity and he is able to use his voice in a variety of ways. He is also able to sing roots or lovers to the absolutely highest order.
What also impresses me is that he has such stamina. His career spans many years without any hint of him decending into any kind of 'celebrity hell' such as drinking or hard drugs. Unlike some other reggae stars who are similarly blessed with voice, like Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs.
Mr Lincoln Minott, if you are reading this, we salute your wonderful talent!

@Leggo
[cover=2004,2366]

What adds to the magic of Sugar is that he has always supported his community ina way that stretches further than any of the socalled 'dons' have done.
He is a beautiful (and sometimes crazy) person.
Sadly his last few releases have not matched his earlier quality, though some of his recent 7"/12"s are really tuff.

I had long felt that Sugar was the type of person that Bellyman describes, so I am happy to hear some confirmation.

I think nowadays Sugar can outlast Gregory in a singing match by a long long way, sadly.

Hey Leggo, that's unfair. Wonder how you would sound with nearly all teeth gone. Sugar still has (most of) them.

I don't know how I would sound? Shall I take LOADS of coke and stuff to find out?Bellyman wrote:Hey Leggo, that's unfair. Wonder how you would sound with nearly all teeth gone. Sugar still has (most of) them.
Actually, even with some pretty good teeth my singing is awful so Gregs could probably out-showdown me even with his gummy vocals!
