What should I keep?

Post by wareika »

As I said on the thread "How do you catalogue your reagge vinyl? By artist? By label? By producer? By genre?" I'm into reorganising my collection.

The point is that I've too much music, even if my collection is thin compared to some others. I don't have anymore space so I need to put aside some stuff.

Well, to be honnest, this is very very hard especially for the not so current discs especially because I know that in some case I will never see these discs again. Kinda of heartbreacking situation.

Actually I've got to solutions for the records I put aside.

First I can't just put them at my mother place cause she has nuff space. The good point is that they are still mine. Bad point is that the one I put aside are discs I don't listen. Not because they are "bad" just because since I begin collecting I defined with more precision what I like and what I don't.

Other solution is to trade these discs... Of course, once a disc is gone I can't change my mind...

I really hesitate and don't know what to do. Espacialy cause I have to put aside more or less 300 LP and 12".

Anyone experienced this kind of collection downsizing?

If the "Living Man" LP is part of the ones you'd like to put apart, let me know!!!

But I know this one will stay at your place!

Is it really impossible to find space in your house for the other records? There's every time some little space to put a few LP. Or maybe ask a reggae fan friend who could keep them at his place...

Yes rasdragon, it's the best solution but it's hard for someone who don't realy trade discs.

Leswoodies, actually I can always find space. But vynils are not the only things I have a lot. I have quite a large books and comics section too. So, I've not that much space for vynils I don't listen to. Morover I'm not alone and my half get pretty much upset seeing all the discs...

It's also a question about how a collection evolve. Do I want everthig I can find or only the stuff I really want? I think it a question of size. When you have more than 1 000 LPs and/or 12" I feel useless to keep everything as you got enought killer to play. I know collectors who goes bothe way. Some have 1000s of LP most of which I won't pay for. Some have only 500 discs but only killers. There is no good way per se. Nevertheless, I really wonder for few monthes if the second solution is the best one...

I was ina way in your case, wareika, and sold part of them... Ive nearly never regretted after (having digitalised them, of course), keeping only the tuffest stuff... Really, if you sell collectors that are not of the rarest, you will be able to buy them again in case you miss them, so start like this...

But for me, 1000 records doesnt sound too much, in term of space, you can easily keep them ina cupboard, isnt it?

What about using record cubes Litelet, you can go up a long way here and keep a lot of records in a small space.

Try googling iCube vinyl storage.

Alternatively, why not allow me to store your collection for you, I have loads of space...

my friend do NOT get rid of your vinyls, especially if they are originals. despite what your other half thinks.
you will only beat yourself up over it later on down the line. trust me, i had to sell half of my collection off for nothing close to what they were worth, it bothers me to this day. that happened almost ten years ago, there isnt a day that goes by that i dont miss what i had to sell.

To true old school rootsman.

You oly appreciate what you had when you no longer have it.

Music is no different, especially when it comes to your vinyl.

I sold my collection in the early 90`s after I got married. I have regretted it ever since, especially as the space I left has just been occupied by the wifes odds and sods.

Wareika, find the space and keep the music, once its gone (wheteher its played or not) you will miss i. And once you realise the mistake it will be to late.

Take it from someone who`s been there.

Yep, I'm another man who sold all his vinyl - around 1984 - and has regretted it ever since.

My current collection will be for sale on the day I die...

Having said that, Wareika makes a good point. We probably all have some stuff that isn't really crucial. It's not our favourite sound and we possibly don't ever play it.

A sensible person would sell these. But all us addicted collectors know that this isn't a sensible thing we are in here, it is a fanatical passion! This is probably why I struggle to sell the stuff I don't even like!
