I have the perfect 7 inch storage, it comes from a kiddie storage set made by Verte Baudet. It's a sort of set of shelves with boxes/trays on. They look very, er, pretty but are the perfect size. I have very few 7s so only need two of these boxes so I junked the feeble shelving, too woobly for vinyl.

Rootikalist and leggo:
Here's what I use for my 7"s...keeps them upright and the sleeve sticks up just enough for retrieval.

the 7 "s are all grouped by rhythm where applicable... Thank JAH for riddimbase.net, etc. Ska/rocksteady in one travel case. Assorted 7"s are grouped alphabetically in 3 different cases... 10"s in one pile ....12"s in another and albums in big tupperware boxes.... I play out fairly regularly and 7''s are the easiest thing to use for me.... take one travel box with rhythms tapered to the venue and I'm set... I have one box that fits only real rock, answer, stalag, sleng ting and heavenless, over 300 some versions on these 5 riddims! Also, the rhythms are all color coded in red, blue ,yellow, etc. sleeves so it is easier to select in low light places... I have no idea how people can run a sound with no organization to their records....Nightmare!

Interesting to see how others do things - surprised at how many folks file by label
Primarily I file by artist's name, whether it be 7", 10", 12" or LP. Although I do keep DJ tunes by themselves with each format.
But I do somewhat divide each format by decade. I feel each decade had it's own sound and that's why I do it that way.
Although with big time artists, like Gregory, Jimmy Riley, Al Campbell etc etc - that have kept recording throughout the years, I keep them all in one place [70's] since that's when they started their careers.
Other than that, the only time I stir things up a bit is when it comes to riddims. Post 1990, since that's when the riddim thing got going strong again - at that point I started to 'bundle' tunes together by riddim - literally scotch taping them together (in sleeves of course
).
So someone like Bushman, Beres or Morgan Heritage may be spread out a bit in the riddim pack sections but databasing all these tunes makes it easy for me to find them if I need to.
Another nice thing about databasing - it fun (and easy) to call up records by producer - but I can see why some folks have organized their tunes by producer.
Mber01 - the color coding thing you have - are they colored coded according to tempo or by riddims?
I always thought if I ever did play out, I'd like to be able to control the tempo [whether it be up or down] but that could be hard if you don't know your records extra well as pointed out by Mber01 - hence the color coding by tempo might solve that issue.
For those looking for a nice databasing system, check out FileMaker Pro - easy to use, not filled with useless bells and whistles, imo very logical layout and functions.

actually its not that hard because i use AtoZ for riddim not artist, and a riddim have always more tune so its easy to keep the overview, a new ting get a red sticker or a 2007 label (for 2007)leggo rocker wrote:Don Digital, you must really know all your music and records very well to order them like that!

Havent got much time to post today, so i'll just write a quick note on arrangement, i DJ out so:
I tend to generally organise my musical style, digital, roots, etc so when flicking through i can get to the style i want easily.
the tunes i play out are usually kept seperate from ones i keep at home, so i dont have to through all the tunes everytime i go out to make a selection.
So theres two seperate catalogues for me and its changed frequently to represent tunes im playing more at the time, its not the most efficient way but it works when your getting tunes out to take places all the time..

just by riddims... Played last night with Rank'n Dan, a real dancehall general from the old school. He categorizes his records by THEMES! Ganja tunes, suffering lovers tunes, political, etc. Very interesting...
