5446 lyrics?

Post by psilomadman »

When Sublime covered this song i always assumed they added these lyrics considering their penchant for adding to their covers, but Toots sings these lyrics on the True Love album. Did Toots add these lyrics on a different version, or did he incorporate them after hearing the sublime version (seems unlikely, or are they from another song entirely? See below.

Do you believe I would take such a thing with me, and give it to a police man?
I wouldn't do that, mmhmm, I wouldn't do that

if I did that would you say
"sir come down and put the charge on me?"
I wouldn't do that, oohhh, I wouldn't do that

I'm not a fool to hurt myself,
But I was innocent to what they done to me.

they were wrong, they were wrong

but give it to me one time (ohh give it to me,yeah!)
give it to me - two times (1, 2)
give it to me three times (1, 2, 3)
give it to me four times (1, 2, 3, 4)

Actually, that's the original version. In 1968 he did a rocksteady version with different lyrics. I prefer the 68 version whole heartily.

I said yeah, listen what I say
I said hear me now, listen what I say
They said stick it up mister
Hear what I say sir
Put your hands in the air sir
And you will get no hurt mister
You do what I say sir
Just what I mean sir
Get your hands in the air sir
Then you will get no hurt no
I said yeah, listen what I say
I said hear me now, listen what I say
Second thing they say I must join the officer
Third thing they say
"Son, give me your number now"
He said "what's your number?"
I don't answer
He said "what's your number man?"
I don't answer
He said "what's your number now?"
He said "what's your number now?"
I said "hey 54-46, that's my number"
"54-46, that's my number"
I said yeah, listen what I say
I said hear me now, listen what I say
"Stick it up mister, hear what I say sir"
"Get your hands in the air sir, and you will get no hurt sir"
He said "Turn out your left pocket"
"Give me a clean search sir"
"Take off your shirt sir"
"I ain't got no ratchet now"
"Stick it up mister, hear what I say sir"
"Get your hands in the air sir, and you will get no hurt now"

Thanks,
What album is the original on? Or was it a single only. I must have the 68 version thats on the Harder they Come soundtrack. I'd like to hear the original. The 68 version is one of my favorite songs of all time due to the extreme vocal passion!

I have the harder they come and pressure drop and sweet and dandy are the only toots that's on it. the 68 version was only released as a single.

My bad, I have 5446 from some Toots Anthology or best of type disc, I dont have it in front of me.I confused what you said thinking the 68 version was the one with the lyrics you posted, which is the one I have. So the version on True Love album is a remake of the 68 version?!

That is correct, and the True Love version with clapton does it no justice.

A good way to hear the two you mention, check the Maytals albums on this site:- "Do the reggae" compilation 66-70
54-46 "THATS" my number............"In the dark" 74
54-46 "WAS" MY NUMBER.
The earlier one is better although i heard the recut first!

Forgot to mention,if your not aware already,54-46 was thought to refer to Toots' prison number from when he was busted for ganja in Jamaica, although i think i've read somewhere that he denies this........still a great track tho and a jamaican classic in my eyes.

I believe the song is true but he said the number was made up. Also the True Love version has Jeff Beck on guitar(Im almost positive) and Clapton is on another track. I think it does it justice simply because this is like 30 years later an Toots is letting his collaboators have influence, the guitar work is geat and while the version certainly cant beat the original it is very good. Toots was a young man recently busted on the original and the true love version is after he is a seasoned performer with much experience. While he has certainly mellowed he still brings such a dynamic energy it is amazing. He is truly an all time great who just keeps bringing it! Thanks for all the info, i found the original and yes it rocks! I like all the versions!"Blame on Me" withe Rachael Yamagata from True Love is so sexy and beautiful, Toots continues to amaze.
