Price for Records

Post by Spy »

I recently started to buy records that I know are not easy to get, examples are Horace Andy's "In the Light" and "Confusion" among others. My question, is there a website were I can get an idea of how much ($) are this records originally selling for, because I've been told ebay gets a little out of hand sometimes.

Thanks

Records/tings in general are only worth what someone is willing or able to pay.
I'd love to see a boycott, drive these ridiculous prices down.

I appreciate your responses and well said Matthew, some prices are ridiculously high, but a boycott would not work. DIE hard collectors and competition is what increases the prices.

A ridiculous price is one set artificially high by a company or individual.

The price on ebay is - usually - the price the market is willing to pay. It may be high, and more than most of us can afford on occasions, but it's the market price.

The reason why ebay has driven the price of the rare reggae records up is because it has an international audience and therefore more bidders (demand) to drive up the price.

But I think prices are softening (except in the case of the super-rare items), maybe in response to recent mortgage and financial problems in western markets?

One pay 300 euro for the album a other pay 25 euro for the same album on ebay.
It's all in the game.

eBay is weird in that way. Many times I've bought records for €20 that sell for four times that cost next time their up (no difference in condition either!).

Just yesterday it was the mediocre Jah B-album. It went for $110!!! I bought mine for approx. $22-$24 in the same great shape.

The thing to do is to watch the auctions over a long time to gauge the real price. So much depends on the sellers descriptions, pictures, keywords, and marketing.

Also there are many dishonest sellers who bid up their own auctions to inflate the price.

Funny, just the other night I was thinking about what Leggo Rocker said, there must be dishonest sellers who create other accounts in order to raise the price, which is truly unfair but we end up in the same place. You want that record, you have to bet on it.
