Re: who should hail as the king of reggae now?
...the contemporary roots reggae scene "king" is in my opinion vaugh benjamin from midnite...maybe naming them on this site is considered some kind of off-topic, but the man is really a gifted genious...especially on their first releases his styles-blending style is unique in contemporary scene and the lyrics are toughtful as no one in reggae today...he has the capacity to create modern anthems, ever heard RAS TO THE BONE or RAS FOR A REASON foe example?? or the whole RAS MEK PEACE album??and even the only one that has been releasing 26 albums in 8 years...what a legacy when this music will be considered "old", maybe 2050?? who will survive will know...greetings everybody and be there for that time...
...sorry for my average english !! ;P

For one to be a king of reggae, he has to be known the world over. His music has to be available to almost all four corners of the world. It's not amazing as when one talks about reggae, the first artist's name you'll is Bob Marley. Why? Was his music promoted more than the others or was he that good? Still the majority of people who don't like reggae still has some soft spot for him.
With the king or not,let the music play on.
This is the Kingdom of Reggae & the king is REGGAE

I don't know about who is the king of reggae but I can safely say that Burning Spear has kept up a high quality standard as an artist and was around during Bob Marley's reign, is still putting out quality music and is known around the world by many. Black Uhuru was ontop of their game during the Michael Rose era. As far as newer artist goes, I must agree with an earlier comment made about Luciano being a great rasta singer. Luciano is one of the best roots singers of today. He pens some very heart touching songs and his concerts are very uplifting too. If he was making music during the 70's I'm sure many would agree.

Well for me, no one!!! The 70's and 80's were the greatest times for proper reggae and since Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Dennis Browm, Burning Spear, Culture, Gregory Issacs, I Roy, U Roy and everyone else who was either singing toasting , dubbing and rootsing at the time, there hasn't been anyone else who remotely comes close to taking these greats artists places at all!!

I agree but with slightly different argumentation the title cannot be transferred its given away once. The king of reggae most people say its bob marley so its him, king of pop most people say micheal jackson so its him. If you ask who is now the king of pop or the king of reggae people tend to say allot of different names. So that title can only be given once. Who is the king of rock and roll ..... etc.
But I guess you wanted to know who is now the most popular reggaeartist. Donnot know, good question. I think morgan heritage is very popular nowadays, well at least overhere in Holland.
