re.Michael Smith
That is one version of the story, that after attending a dance an argument climaxed in throwing stones at him and one hit him on the head and he died instantly. Other sources tell it different :
"On 17 August 1983, while walking to a friend's home, Smith was stopped by three men at Stony Hill Square (Kgn.JA). An argument - said to have bee political in nature - erupted and Smith was struck on the head with a rock. A motorist drove Smith, still clinging to life, to the nearby Stony Hill Clinic. Reportedly the clinic did not accept him due to lack of identification. Smith was then driven to Kingston Public Hospital. He was dead upon arrival at approximately 11 am..." Quote from Reggae Directory Vol.5, 1994.

"What other dub poets can you name?"
In the mid 80s in Stockwell,London, I used to live opposite a Dread called Michael Archangel or Arkangel? I'm fairly sure he was a poet and maybe a dub poet but I don't know if he ever recorded. Anyone else on here know or remember Michael.
Regards
Rob

Well.... dub-poetism rocks!
I still think "Sonnys lettah" is one of the best tunes ever, lyrically speaking.
Other dubpoets..... Have someone mentioned Jean Binta Breeze? I dont know that much about her, but she is a female LKJ u might say.
I only have one album with the lady, it is called Tracks. Produced by LKJ himself on his LKJ Records.
Hmm... I think I have to go and put on the dvd LKJ live in Paris right now, one damn cool performance!!

Re: Linton Kwesi Johnson
oku onuora..i heard a cassette of his many years ago ..a jamaican dub poet..that release i heard was on ROIR records...also Michael Smith.Well, he gets a lengthy mention in a book named THE BEST A MAN CAN GET.. author i cant remember...who writes of hard times in the 1980s London area, living under Thatcher. The author went to see MSmith live, and loved it..a few weeks later he found out Michael was dead..i thought i recalled John Peel saying it was a car crash?..im probably wrong there..but MI CYAAAN BELIEVE IT got nuff airplay on Radio one from Mr Peel...and rightly so. I last saw LKJ in Bradford, July 2001..i first saw him at a public meeting in Manchester after the riots in moss side in 1981...great stuff.

Used to have Michael's album in my possession but alas no more. Looking forward to hearing his voice and reading his words once more. For some reason links me straight to Gil Scott Heron (probably technically incorrect for this forum but there we are). Anyway, powerful writing is always just that, listen if you can.
