Post by ital kemar »

what a pity there isnt more material available from these two singers. dont know of any LPS by these. is there any? maybe its time someone collected their songs and put them out there. have only a handfull of each singer off black ark compilations. pity. would love to hear more.

Lion right.
Quote David Katz from People Funny Boy :
"When Jah Come".....was sung by a....singer previously known as Bunny Gayle but re-named Devon Irons by Scratch on this occasion:the pair first worked together in 1971"

No, that was discussed on B&F's forum some years ago, Irons was not Russell, he confirmed that some years before his death. Irons was an obscure guy, not even Bunny Gayle from Viceroys as has been suggested. what his real name was is still unknown as far as I know, but Devon Irons was a name given to him by Lee Perry

According to the liner notes on the LP box set cover written by Steve Barrow (a kind of reference in reggae music...) Devon Irons IS Devon Russell. If you have it at home check, it says "... Devon Irons (Russell)...".
Don't bother checking the CD as it is too small to read.

"Ketch Vampire" and "When Jah Come" are both credited to Devon Irons, but are actually sang by two different persons.

Russell and Irons, two different Devons...
Well, Mr. Barrow himself, and others, explained the confusion.
Devon Russell told him he was NOT Devon Irons.

For me Vampire and When Jah Come are sung for the same singer.

This is really confusing.

By the way there is more material by Devon Irons than the two Ark tunes. "Jerusalem" and "Different Song" just name a few.
