Trial & error.

Basically, that's also the best way I've found. Sometimes I search the forums here and at B&F to find any info I can about an album which will help me decide, but the body of reggae is just so large that there are, inevitably, holes in coverage. As I get deeper into reggae, these holes become much more apparent, and I have to rely on trial & error.

As far as trial and error goes i used to focus on album covers a lot if the cover didnt look good i probably wouldnt want the LP.

I'm glad I haven't followed that philosophy, otherwise I'd be missing out on some great albums and instead have loads of crap ones...

2) don't buy trojan box set, don't buy mad professor's stuff

What's wrong with the Trojan box sets? I think some of them are pretty good, especially for reggae newbies.

Some of the best reggae albums have the kookiest album covers...never judge the album by it's cover...big NO NO.

I always say "don't let your friends spoon feed you your reggae, try something new, take a gamble.....you may lose here and there , but when you win....boy does it feel (and sound) good!

True ... never judge an album by it's cover. Some of my favorite albums have some of the worst artworks possible.

The two above are just two examples.

I don't know how to select music. After a while you can just »know« what is good by checking the credits, labels, year of release and such.

Reggae is fortunately a very even genre where artists/producers release great material during some periods and less as good other periods. It's just a matter of knowing those periods. Often it proves fruitful.

So you'll be missing out on the works of Dennis Bovell then? Pity, because some of it (but not all!) definitely ranks very very high in the reggae hall of fame.

You would also miss out on a lot of Bullwackies' stuff! Much of it made not in Kingston but in New York - or even Japan!
