there's that attitude among some that herb, rasta and reggae belongs to each other, but each thing is to be viewed seperately. reggae is not rasta and rasta is not necessarily herb, that's a distorted view if anything

what is there is that, as leggo pointed out in the byles thread (which i hijacked, better to start this topic where it belongs, off topic), herb is inevitably something common in rasta, possibly reggae - at least it used to be, i'm not so sure it is anymore

herb is one thing, rasta is another, and reggae comes from somewhere else. in the end, its just music

but reggae is not 'herb music', as if you can't listen and enjoy it properly if not 'under the influence' - that's ridiculous

some smoke, within musical circles, and other don't believe in it.

some rastas smoke, some don't. often i get the feel that people take it for granted that a rastaman is supposed to smoke, or a reggae musician to smoke

its not like that

my twopenniesworth, again

the way we look to reggae & herb is represent and has been proyected by the reggae musicians themselves.About Tony Chin if he is not down with smoking but play instruments in any herb tune he is supporting the argument with the music.Maybe the music was record before the liric but even so if he let it happen he is backing the propaganda

Chin is one of many, there's a lot of different views out there so don't let one man's actions colour it all

For sure is not a ome man thing, but many artist fit in the point i'm traying to make. This bring to my mind a joke from Dave Chappel. If i'm dress like a cop and you come to me cause an emergency imagine me saying "just cause i'm dress this way you belive i'm going to risk my life for you..No!So your traying to say that any man who wear dread no smoke Is ok with me but they dress in the ganya uniform
peace out

rastafarianism began before the first reggae song was ever written (debates on who actually wrote and produced it but that should be a thread on its own) in the 60s.
reggae started in jamaica, where rasta faith was born. i think, if i am correct, that reggae basically in the long run was born out of jazz musicians meeting up with count ossie and his crew. a new musical sound began along with the sharing of the rasta ideas, no?
interesting how at around that time many jazz musicians in the states where smoking herb as where those in jamaica.
of course we all know that many rastas consider herb to be a sacrament.
but there are plenty of rastafarians that don't puff simply because they don't like it or perhaps want to keep their vessels clean of toxins.
there are rastas without dreads, just as there are downbeat fans with dreads who are not rastas. there are rastas who don't listen to reggae.
there are reggae fans who puff all the time because they enjoy the riddims but are not rastas.
i have been puffing for over 20 years and have been dubbing it up for just as long. i don't consider myself to be rastafarian although i do share many of the ideas that the movement holds dear.
i'll probably slow down or maybe stop at some time, depending on what life gives me in the next round. but i firmly believe in pro-choice all around for everything as long as there is no harm caused to other living things. for now, i enjoy the herb too much to stop.

peace for all people

Herb and Reggae - intimately linked - sure you can have one without the other - but it just ain't right.
Definitely helps to play better Reggae, in my opinion!
