this question is impossible to answer because everybody have a difference of opinion.
the best way to do this is to know what you like to hear, if you are deep into the music then you will know how to take a gamble and get what you are truly looking for.

As far as trial and error goes i used to focus on album covers a lot if the cover didnt look good i probably wouldnt want the LP.
On the contrary:
Some of the best reggae albums have the kookiest album covers...never judge the album by it's cover...big NO NO.
i found such great albums as these 2 just by cover interest alone..
[cover=346,401]
[cover=1277,1469]
so on the contrary you can find many great lps if you search by cover, show me an LP with nice cover art that isnt good.

well... I won't try to convince people that these artists don't diserve to be heard. sorry I think it's better for me to NOT explain my point of view cos it tends to irritate a couple of guys here.sean wrote:da CENSORED ONE....some fine points you make there. Honestly the artists you mentioned are not my favourite ones for many reasons (musical and ethical)...
even if I spent some sunny afternoon on the beach with aswad playing drums when I was a youth...
even if capital letters "smoking my ganja" (12) is really a great track...
sorry that you didn't get the irony on this bitbill wrote:quote - "Author : daCENSOREDone

1) don't work and listen to all the music you can... "
ummm...
I think its Jah Bless and definately not Job Less
I know dennis bovell and heard tons of his stuff. I'm not surprised if you rank his work very high in your virtual reggae hall of fame... I guess it's the same reggae hall of fame with ub40 at the top.leggo rocker wrote: So you'll be missing out on the works of Dennis Bovell then? Pity, because some of it (but not all!) definitely ranks very very high in the reggae hall of fame.
You would also miss out on a lot of Bullwackies' stuff! Much of it made not in Kingston but in New York - or even Japan!
bullwackies stole and ruined some of the best riddims, melodies and basslines... the quality of their sound is really low. even if I own records from this label
if you want some examples of jamaican music ruined by some non jamaican people, just compare the catch a fire jamaican versions with the ones recorded by an english producer with some english musician (that solo guitar bwark..). and those ballads... thanks chris blackwell!
if you prefer these songs after blackwell's treatment it is easy to understand why you stand up for ub40 and bullwackies.

I agree with you! trojan roots box set(by example) not that bad... I remember their first releases... ska, rocksteady etckukuman wrote: daCENSOREDone wrote :2) don't buy trojan box set, don't buy mad professor's stuff
What's wrong with the Trojan box sets? I think some of them are pretty good, especially for reggae newbies.
but the sound quality is really low and it would be funny to know how many times the same song can appear on these box set...
some others trojan box set (dub by example) contain full original albums but already released on the same label (black ash dub sly and the revolutionaries)...
most of people who stopped buying trojan box set did it because they felt ripped off.
