You have to wonder what is going on when you see listings like this on e-bay. Here's some Big Joe singles that have just gone up for auction with the prices they are asking followed by, in brackets, what I paid for the same pressings in the last 3 months:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BIG-JOE-NATTY-CAL ... dZViewItem
£86.46 (£11.00)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BIG-JOE-WEED-SPEC ... dZViewItem
£67.24 (£14.00)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BIG-JOE-NO-TURNIN ... dZViewItem
£57.64 (£7.50)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BIG-JOE-SELLSASIE ... dZViewItem
£62.44 (£9.99)
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/BIG-JOE-PLAN-EDUC ... dZViewItem
£36.02 (£11.49)

I'm sure they are near mint condition and some have the printed sleeve but that can't justify the difference unless I'm missing something.

REGGAE IS NOT LIKE POP.
SOMETIMES 20 RECORDS HAVE BEEN PRESSED, SOMETIMES 100, SOMETIMES 200, PLUS MUSICIANS CAN'T PLAY LIKE THAT NO MORE, THE STUDIOS DON'T SOUND LIKE THAT NO MORE.
IS NO WONDER PRICES CAN'T STOP GOING UP, THIS ROOTS REGGAE MUSIC IS JUST HONEY TO THE BEES

I paid around 20 dollars for this one recently, in MINT condition with the correct picture sleeve:

When I first saw these listings I wondered if the guy had got his decimal point in the wrong place.

If they all bomb he's gonna lose out because the higher the start price, the higher the ebay fees.

Maybe they're buying to re-sell to a relatively unexploited market? Certainly spending a lot!

Leggo,

Snap, I picked up one of those on Doctor Bird in the picture sleeve for about the same price as you.

You've touched on the issue I was wondering about. Surely he's going to lose out in fees unless some one is silly enough to buy one of them. How much does it cost a seller to list on e-bay?

The amazing thing is he DOES have bids on some of the items. Most of them by just one or two sellers who really must be in a very secure financial position to be spending that much on singles.

Why oh why do these idiots bid on stuff so early? They are simply driving the price up even higher! Unless of course they are the seller!

Aaaaargh! I just searched my own bidding history! And this isn't as bad as it might have been as I've been avoiding eBay for some weeks now!

"Why oh why do these idiots bid on stuff so early? They are simply driving the price up even higher!"

Does the time of bid have a material effect, apart from the factor of time simply running out at the end?

I think it can work both ways - maybe late bidding can lead to panic prices being offered which are higher than if you have time to think about it? Dunno, just pondering really!
