Well, I've met and worked with loads of writers, photographers, designers and even some musicians. And based on that experience I'd tend to stand my ground on the attention seeking pitch.

Some people are natural born story tellers. And they like to gather folk around to listen to them, or read their work. And that's a subtle type of attention seeking isn't it?

It's not a bad thing, not at all. It's natural really. Most musicians I have spoken to love to play live (or at least until they've done it too much too long) - because they FEED off the audience reaction.

When you write, you don't get such an immediate feedback (until the letters start coming in to the editor and most of those that bother to right are - sadly - negative). It's a much more anonymous craft even if you name is appearing by the articles or on the book cover.

But of course, if you are lucky enough to write about your passion, then you're doing it out of enthusiasm for the subject. Just better hope that your passion doesn't get dampened by the fact that it has become your work.

that's probably correct, its mostly negative and some sort of accusing criticism dropping in to editors'desks unfortunately. one hope they could be at least a little constructive, but that is seldom the case

i guess its subtle in some way, but it must be several different reasons, individually, why they end up in the spotlight. i'm not sure all of them like it, but they get used to it because they serve a purpose, filling a gap where so few are doing it

well, just my twocents anyhow

Actually many writers are outwardly shy. But writing is an ideal way for the shy to achieve recognition, attention if you like, because it is usually so anonymous.

Stephen King for instance could walk through the streets of most towns and cities in the world without much fear of recognition (despite his mugshot adorning most of his million-seller books).

The same can't be said for pop or film stars.

Don't get me wrong, I wasn't holding up this attention seeking thing as a negative. Why should it be wrong to want the world to see your talents? Especially when that talent is actually rather rare.

i guess that's right, hiding behind a keyboard is enough to get what they want. no, i didn't get it the negative way either, got your point

Many of the members here don't dip into 'off topic' enough. They probably don't realise how busy it is in here nowadays!
