But -- this thread has gone a little off topic. My question was "do moves like that of the French Govt. mean that the death knell has been sounded for illegal downloading"
Of course not, no one can stop it. There will always be a mean of sharing music, there's no definitive way to control downloading unless putting down the whole web. Computer science has always been creative and won't stop being so from one day to another. This measure, if applied (not sure it'll happen) will only be an announcement and will be useless. That's a part of the character N. Sarkozy (his Majesty Great Emperor of France and Africa) : he speaks, speaks and do nearly nothing but sending immigrants to Africa an Asia, taking money to the people to give it to the wealthiest. He will again be ridiculous but that's the way it is. Didn't want to make it a political thread but speaking of France those days, it's a bit difficult not to. This wouldn't have happened with another president, even a more conservative one (maybe possible).
This measure is an attempt to privacy and i'm strongly against it.
"Net firms will monitor what their customers are doing..."
No, no, no ! they surely do it yet but it's illegal and they can go to court if it's revealed. I don't want it to change, privacy is one of the most important rights.
