Re: Why No Girls
Hi there,
I was thinking about this topic, and I think that another thing is involved, except those you mentioned. Economical reasons - girls spend much more money on cosmetics, clothes or whatever something else, and I don't suppose any girl to spend all her money on reggae albums, as we do:)If they are interested in music, they may buy one or two albums, but it's far away from addcition, right?

Re: Why No Girls
Girls are less involved than boys in reggae music accordingly when it comes to wax collection, that's a fact. But I totally disagree with that reason. We (males) have also our own expenses on other things like clothes. IMO, what was saying Pluie is much more close to the reality, there's a strong machism in reggae music and in society in general, believe it or not, we live in a patriarcal society. We exclude women from lots of things (education, jobs, culture, sport, music...) and they unconsciously exclude themselves due to that education. Still today in western countries, still today in reggae music.Dub out of Poland wrote: I was thinking about this topic, and I think that another thing is involved, except those you mentioned. Second reason, linked to the first one, is that men are always trying to give proofs of their masculinity (most obvious signs being driving by cars and showing muscles
We should ask a psychiatrist how he traduces this need for a big collection, i'm pretty sure this second reason would appear.

Re: Why No Girls
In all the years I have met lots and lots of girls and women who were fascinated by reggae and loved it (roots too). They like the riddims to dance to and most of them were taken by the lyrics (even roots too).
Only thing that girls/women are not going for is collecting music but that is not special to reggae. This is going through all styles of music(Blues, Jazz, Rock'n'Roll etc.).

Re: Why No Girls
i don't know any women who are into dub. my wife, however, has become a dub fan by default, yet nowhere near the addict that i am.
in my experiences, when i see women into reggae, they tend to listen to bob and maybe even p tosh, or they are just into dancing and listen to jump style dancehall cuz that is what they play at the clubs. and some of the hippie chicks are only into sunshine-happy reggae and love songs as opposed to, let's say, prince far i.
but when you mention dub plates or names like flabba, they have no idea what you are talking about, which is fine, but they are the ones missing out!
i'll bet there are women out there who have extensive reggae collections, refined tastes, and knowledge, but i unfortunately have yet to meet any.
peace

Re: Why No Girls
it really depends where you are, where im at there are plenty of roots loving women out there, although there are equally the same amount even more non reggae loving females.
who can blame them, as a society we have trained women not to love roots music. they have been taught to love vanity and to worry about staying thin and keeping up on the latest trends.
if you wan females to love roots & culture you have to change the fabric on which society is made up of.

Re: Why No Girls
I know plenty of women DJs and fans into roots reggae. For the most part the ones I know can't be bothered with a web forum. I think regardless of the forum online--you'll find mostly men!
