New to you???

Post by todd »

As reggae lovers, we are constantly discovering new singers, groups, bands, labels, producers...the whole bit. I usually stumble on to them here on Roots Archives, while digging around on ebay, or from one of my buddies. Right now, my new obsession is Keith Poppin and Rocking Horse. I just cannot get enough. Have yet to find a Keith Poppin song I don't like. What I want to know is, who have you recently "discovered"? Whose songs, that are new to you, are you listening to over and over right now?

Oldies wise: Mighty Cloud Band, Ranking Joe, and surprisingly I never owned a Toyan release up till recently.

Newer sound: Martin Campbell & Daweh Congo.

Hopetown Junior (*not* Lindo).

Only got one record by him on a 12 inch 45 but it's an absolute killer!

With me it's not so much an artist as a new 'era' - the early Eighties. Having spent far too long believing reggae ceased to exist at around midnight on 31 December 1979, I've only recently discovered Barrington Levy and Eek-A-Mouse and all those early Greensleeves 12"s. It will probably take another 25 years for Digital to become acceptable though!

And this week's specific discovery is Roy Man, the source of a previously unidentified (at least to me) riddim under a Jungle Brothers mash-up. I've still no idea who Roy is, but at least I can now answer the "what's this then?" question when I'm playing out.

Leggo,
Anthony Johnson's Gunshot with 5 bonus tracks is availalbe from Dusty Groove America. Unfortunately for you it's on CD, but it might tide you over until you find the LP.

Sugar Minott "Rydim": an early digital tune I wasn't so fond of at first, but now I'm addicted to it and want more of Sugar Minott's digital stuff.

Also late 80s rubadub, Gussie Clarke productions after falling in love with a Cultural Roots tune "Different Style".
Maybe I'm getting more open minded about digital stuff. I'm sure I'm not alone.
