Best Ijahman album?

Post by Funkyfred »

Well, My top three is....
Nr3
[cover=2282,2637]
Nr2
[cover=3066,2835]

Nr1!!
[cover=2683,3099]

Of course Africa is also a wicked album!
Ahh, I dont know, its hard to choose!
Ijahman have made 30albums, I heard?
And I only got around 15 of them! But it feels like Ijah "digitalized" his music after "Tell it to the children". On his first 2 Island-records album he used an entire reggae-orchestra with string-section and all!!
But then it got computerized, I dont know....
Some of u maybe now better, as I said, I only heard 50% of his works. But he is a living legend, no doubt!:D

hi funkyfred.
love ijahman too. one of my favourite artists. wouldnt argue with your choices, those 3 records are classics. i also like 'live over europe' and 'inside out', and the dub of the 'sings bob marley' is nice too.
dosent tour in uk too much. hoping to see him sometime play live.

Funkyfred-

Ijahman is one of my top 20 favorite reggae artists.

I totally agree with your top three. I'd recommend "Lilly of My Valley" is you are into his pre-digital sound. It is great music although not nearly as cultural (it's made up of very srititual love songs that remind me of Psalms).
Also, Forward Rastaman is good if not 100% the equal of the four you mentioned.

"I Do" is with his wife, Madge, and is pre-digital but not as good as his best IMHO.

Two digital LPs that are worth picking up are "Kingfari" and "Inside Out."

I've only got the three above albums ... and I think I rate them in the same order they were released with Haile I Hymn being my favourite.

The album Africa is also very good. Haven't really checked for any of his other releases when I've heard a little from them.

I saw Ijahman live a couple of years ago - it was a very weak show unfortunately.

The first 3 albums of Ijahman I bought in the mid 80s were purchased in the exact order Funkyfred has listed above, although I would say Haile I Hymn is my favourite followed by Tell It To The Children then Are We a Warrior.
I guess I have around 20 of his albums now and along with Africa I would recommend Arkart as a great pre-digital release.
As mentioned elsewhere on the forum, the entire Ijahman catalogue is in the process of being re-released on CD.

I've mentioned this before I know, but the original LPs of his first two albums above are completely different mixes to the later CD versions. It will be interesting to see which versions they choose for the new CD releases.

Forgot to mention... the CD versions of his first two albums also have bonus tracks not listed here in RA (including a 'hidden' one that isn't even listed on the release itself).
