From memory. In JA in the 70s a batch of flour caused sickness in the ghetto because it was contaminated or something.

That's the source of the record Poison Flour, which is covered on Dr Alimantado's Best Dressed Chicken LP. Although I don't know who originated the song.

I'm guessing (only guessing) that Flour Power by Naggo is about this incident.

A True You Na Know 12" on S&G (Black Roots mix is different) is my favorite Naggo Morris tune. Easily one of the heaviest tunes I've heard.

You know I found some obscure document online that talked about this incident (I'm assuming it's the same):

-----
In January 1976, 79 persons in Jamaica were acutely poisoned by the organophosphorus insecticide parathion. Seventeen died. Cases occurred in three episodes at separate locations, but all patients had consumed wheat flour from a single lot consisting of 5264 cotton bags. Parathion in concentrations of <1 to 9900 ppm was identified in flour from six bags in this lot; three had splash marks. The flour had been milled in Western Europe from European wheat, carried in trucks to a dockside warehouse, and loaded aboard ship after 2–5 days' storage. In Jamaica, the flour had moved from quayside to outbreak locations along separate routes through two import houses. Site inspections and review of shipping records suggested that the likely point of contamination was the European port, where foodstuffs and insecticides were stored in the same warehouse.

I've not had much luck finding Naggo online (in cd format)...seems to be mostly on vinyl but really not much in that way from what I've seen. I know I know....vinyl is where it's at for reggae/dub....I've only been in the game for 6 years now so consider me a Newbie. I had good fortune of learning the classic artists early on, but I don't own any vinyl. Many thanks to all that posted replies!!

The very same problem I had when getting back into collecting reggae a few years back. Although there is FAR more on CD nowadays.

Beware, the failing to find what you want on CD and then seeing it on vinyl is how the vinyl-pushers get you hooked on their product.

You know the anti-drug slogans:

"Vinyl wrecks lives. Just say no!"

:D

BTW: Thanks, from us all, for taking the time to find that story. Top marks to you on that one!

I know that it is only a matter of time before I break down and buy a record player - seriously. The more I get into reggae / dub music, the more I want to buy on cd.....and when I can't find it on cd but see it on vinyl, I just know I'll break down one day and do it.

I love the slogan!

I think I'm gonna put that slogan on a T Shirt for my next live DJ session...

He who knows it, feels it!

I love Jacob Miller's version of False Rasta (assuming it is the same song)...I bet Naggo's was amazing too!
