Like most pirate labels, it didn't last very long and the product is now hard to find. We don't have any and we won't stock any...good looking CD's though, I have to admit.

Other than the two controversial Studio 1 CDs which were withdrawn, and the one Marley oddity (licensed, but from someone who can't have had the rights) I know of no other claim that JG was less than above board. Almost everything was taken from master tapes, and they focused on just a few producers (Byron Lee, Clancy Eccles, Lloyd Daley, Alvin Ranglin, Bunny Lee, and a couple others). They were around for quite a long time too, around a decade. Great notes, one of the best Reggae reissue labels ever, actually.

Hi ReggaeFire, agree with you about them being one of the best - pity they packed up. Do you know the names of the two studio one's you mention, which were withdrawn? I don't think I've ever seen them.ReggaeFire wrote:Other than the two controversial Studio 1 CDs which were withdrawn, and the one Marley oddity (licensed, but from someone who can't have had the rights) I know of no other claim that JG was less than above board. Some of the CDs were cheesy looking and some were decent looking. Most of the later ones had awesome liner notes and great sound quality.
The Studio One albums were not controversial, they were 100% piracy (unauthorized, and Mr. Dodd was livid) Mr. Dodd phoned me about it and told me to stop buying them and also he wanted his home address, which I wisely did not provide.
