Cables - What kind of world / Studio one english press

Post by ton1 »

I recently bought that album :
[cover=1383,1592]
Though the cover I have don't have the green and yellow lines on the sides and the cover is laminated.

Mine is an english press (cover and labels). I didn't know there was SO english press so I was wondering if the stamper is the same and if there are other albums like this one.

The labels looks fairly recent, classic black like this one :
[cover=4371,2917]

but with Peckings' address on it. But the cover is laminated like first Trojan releases so I think it's a 70s press but I'm not sure.

The **["Downbeat Special Studio One Album Discography"](http://www.downbeat-special.co.uk/shop.html#booksale)** lists two releases;

Original JA Issue - CN 3736
**UK "Peckings" Release - PSOL 002**

Got the original UK press and the label does not look like yours. It's a red S1 baner label with Peckings adress printed on it.

If your copy has the label you present you have certainly a repress with an original cover. Highly possible as some repress came out with original cover, even in the 90's...

Thanks Wareika !
Mine is clearly not the first press. But I was wondering if it can be a very recent press with old Peckings address on it anyway and also because the cover is laminated and I had never seen any laminated cover after the early 70s (even non-reggae), on the other side the font used looks recent and the wax is quite light and thin so basically I can't decide :).
Anyway, I uploaded a picture of the label here :

Another question : do you have the original release year of this album ?

My copy got the same UK laminated cover (no yellow/green). The label got the red S1 logotype, alright. One funny thing though, the pressing is miss-labeled with the PSOL 003 label (Love me forever-Carlton & the Shoes)!

Anyone else react on the insane stereo mix on this album? All the instruments in the left channel and all the singing + the drum beat in the right? Why did they do it that why? If you can't change the setting to mono manually, it sound really weird..!

That's the first thing that hit me as I'm quite close to my speakers on my desk and I have to tune the balance very carefully. At the begining with only instruments, I thought there was a problem on my hifi or with the pressing. Very weird yes, I should have switched to mono :).

I thought it might have been that they were recording onto 2 track, but I've just read that Randy's were using a 4 track in 1969 so presumably Studio One was using 4 track in 1970.
Does anyone know if that was the case?

The music is from 70, but the pressing on S1 Pecking is from 77 or just after... Actually there are only four Peckings S1 LPs. The first is Sugar Minott "Live Loving" from 77 which came out first in UK (as I was told...) and after in Jam with the black/pink cover the same year. Then the Cables LP and the Carlton & the Shoes one. That's all for the "original" PSOL 000X Peckings LPs.

The fourth one is "Studio One Present A Tribute to Peckins". On label, it uses the same font as your ton1 but stil have the red banner. Yours is probably from the same period (mid 90's I would say, but not sure).

Same mix at home. Weird... There are other Lps with such a mix but not that extremistic (ie music on one channel and music + vocal on the other one). I think the UK pressing of Screaming Targets is a good exemple (I only have a jam press on Gussie 76 which is just "normal")...
